Greg
Thompson was born and attended schooling in the Upper Hunter NSW. In
1979 he moved to the Northern Territory; working with children and youth
based in Darwin through the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Scripture Union;
Adventure camping; and working with children involved in petrol sniffing;
and youthwork at St Peters Nightcliff.
Greg moved to Melbourne in 1984 to commence study for the priesthood,
ordination and training, including work with the Mission of St James
and St John, St James Old Cathedral and St John’s Heidelberg.
He was made a deacon and priest at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1986
by Archbishop David Penman.
1988 saw Greg return to Darwin as a Parish priest, where he established
a care ministry for the local community at St James Sanderson, became
President of NT Council of Social Services 1992-93, established Darwin
Marriage Education and helped establish Anglicare NT, and was a Reserve
Army Chaplain to Northern Command and Norforce 89-92.
In 1994 Greg moved to Sydney where he fulfilled various positions; including
the role of NSW State Secretary of the Bush Church Aid Society and worked
in their national office as a Media and Research officer 94-99; Board
Director NSW Council of Social Services 94-99; and a member of the NSW
Premier’s Dept Regional Communities Consultation Committee 96-99
which involved working across country NSW in consultations with rural
communities.
In 1999 Greg commenced his position at St John’s Darlinghurst
with a large parish based community services – including a legal
centre, counseling, and a 5 night per week drop in centre called Rough
Edges. Greg was also the chaplain to the medically supervised injection
room; and was living on church site between St Vincent hospital and
Darlinghurst fire station.
In 2004 Greg became Rector of historic pioneer church St John’s
Canberra with an extensive parish and outreach ministry; member of Rotary
Canberra; Board member of Directions ACT, drug and alcohol NGO organization.
In Feb 2007 Greg was elected as the 5th Bishop of the Northern Territory
and Consecrated Bishop 31 May 07. Greg is married to Kerry and they
have two adult children – Katherine in Adelaide as an Environment
Education Officer and James in Sydney with work in the IT industry.
