Marie (Enid) Dodd (nee Grieve)
(1918-1988)

At the outbreak of World War II, Enid enlisted in the Women’s Australian Auxiliary Air Force, and served as a coder/telegraphist. The WAAAFs were volunteers at first, then in 1943, they were able to enlist formally and were committed to staying until the end of the war. "Ipswich Remembers" by Robyn Buchanan describes Jean Overell’s experiences after being accepted and sent to Sandgate for training: "I had never been away from home before. We were 28 to a hut, and we had to fill our own palliasses and sleep without sheets or pillows. Apparently, you came to do a man’s job, and you just had to get on with it. There were a few tears and sobs the first night".
