Mogo Creek to Wisemans Ferry
Monday, 9 June 2008
Three days along the Great North Road is enough to realise how hard those convicts from day old were pressed.
As a part of the National Parks Discover series, this three day hike consisted of a pleasant walk starting from the Mogo Creek campsite ending up at Wisemans Ferry. We progressed along a portion of the Great North Road, built by convict labour between 1926 and 1836 as it winds its way through some scenic bush from Newcastle to Sydney. Although I cannot regard this walk as particularly spectacular, there is some sense of history which can be felt through the road’s twists and turns.
Day 2: Miserably wet sixteen kilometres to Ten Mile Hollow. All feeling worn and bedraggled, we were fortunate to find lodging at the beautiful Wat Buddha Dhamma. Of course as soon as we acquired this lodging the rains stopped.
Day 3: Only fourteen kilometres, but they dragged on and on. The final stretch home provided some historical merit with a maintained portion of the Great North Road complete with historical markings. Feeling very very sore, we could all but appreciate the effort that must have been put into the making of this road.
