[Home; Site map; Updates; Projects] [CED blog post Jesus is Jehovah!] [Blog book outline Jesus is Jehovah!]
This is my new daily `quiet time' study, having completed The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. When finished it will comprise all Bible verses which show that the Lord Jesus Christ of the New Testament is Jehovah (Heb.Yahweh) of the Old Testament. This will complement my blog book outline Jesus is Jehovah!. This is a work-in-progress.

- INTRODUCTION
This study will show that Jehovah (Heb. Yahweh of the Old Testament is the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ of the New Testament. That is, God the Son, the second Person of the Holy Trinity (Mt 28:19; 2Cor 13:14; 1Pet 1:2) is Jehovah. But this does not preclude the other Persons of the Holy Trinity, the Father (Dt 32:6; Isa 63:16; 64:8; Mal 1:6) and the Holy Spirit (Isa 61:1; Lk 4:18; 2Cor 3:17) also being known by the Name, Jehovah (cf. Mt 28:19 & Gn 19:24). Unless otherwise indicated, the Bible translation used will be the American Standard Version (1901), because it translated the Heb. Yahweh as "Jehovah," rather than "LORD" as in most other English Bible translations.
- JESUS HAS NAMES & TITLES OF JEHOVAH [top]
- Name
Jesus' name in the New Testament took the place of Jehovah's name in the Old Testament. To receive someone in Jesus' name is to receive Jesus (Mt 18:5 = Mk 9:37 = Lk 9:48). Cf. Mt 24:5; Mk 9:39; 13:6; 16:17; Lk 21:8; Jn 14:13-14,26; 15:16,21; 16:23,24,26; Ac 9:15-17; Rom 9:17; Rev 2:3,13; 3:8. One's attitude to those bearing the name of Jesus will determine one's eternal reward (Mk 9:41). Cf. Mt 25:37-46. Gatherings together are to be in Jesus' name (Mt 18:20; 1Cor 5:4). Jesus' followers will be persecuted for His name's sake (Lk 21:12).
- Jesus ("Jehovah is salvation")
Jesus' name (Heb. Yeshua, " Yahweh is salvation"), was uniquely given to Him by God (Mt 1:20-21,25; Lk 2:21. Cf. Jn 17:11; Php 2:9-10; Heb 1:4). Yet salvation belongs to Jehovah (Ps 3:8).
- God
Jehovah alone is God (2Ki 19:15,19; Isa 37:16). He is the true God (Jer 10:10). All other gods are idols (1Chr 16:26; Ps 96:5). Jesus affirmed that Jehovah is the one true God (Mk 12:28-29; Dt 6:4; Mk 12:32,34).
- God
Jesus is the prophesied "God [Gk. ho Theos] with us" (Mt 1:22-23; Isa 7:14. Cf. Lk 7:16). He is the Word (Gk. Logos), who is by nature God, become flesh (Jn 1:1,14). Jesus is "the only begotten God [Gk. monogenes Theos]" (Jn 1:18 NASB). Jesus and the Father are one (Jn 10:30). Which the Jews rightly understood that Jesus claimed to be God. (Jn 10:33).
- Son of God
Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Mt 4:3; 14:33; Mk 1:1; Lk 1:35); the Son of the Most High (Lk 1:32; Mk 5:7; Lk 8:28). Indeed He is "the Son of God" [Gk. ho uios tou theou (Mt 26:63; Mk 3:11; Lk 4:41; Jn 1:34, 49; 11:27; 20:31; Ac 9:20; 1Jn 3:8; 4:15; 5:5,20; Rev 2:18); ton uion tou theou (Heb 4:14; 6:6; Heb 10:29; Jn 5:10,12); tou uios tou theou (Mt 16:16). Jesus is "the Son" [ho uios] (Jn 8:36). Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (Mt 16:16; Jn 11:27). Cf. Mt 26:63; Jn 20:31. Jesus claimed to be "the Son of God" (Jn 10:36). Cf. Jn 3:35-36; 5:19-26; 6:40; 13:32; 14:13; 1Cor 15:28; Col 1:13; Heb 1:3,8; 7:28; 1Jn 2:22-24; 2Jn 1:9. He is simply "the Son" (Mt 24:36; Mk 13:32). Jesus is the owner of the vineyard's "beloved son" in the Parable of the Tenants (Mt 21:33-41; Mk 12:1-9; Lk 20:9-16). He is the son of the king who gave a marriage feast for his son in the Parable of the Wedding Banquet (Mt 22:1-14). He is "The only Son of God [Gk. monogenes huios, "one and only son" (NIV) "only begotten son" (ASV, KJV)] (Jn 3:16,18; 1Jn 4:9. Cf. Lk 7:12; 9:38; Jn 1:14; Heb 11:17). The demons recognised that Jesus was the Son of God [Gk. ho uios tou theos (Mk 3:11; Lk 4:41; Mt 8:29; Mk 5:6; Lk 8:28). God the Father acknowledged Jesus as "my beloved Son" (Mt 3:16-17; Mk 1:10-11; Lk 3:21-22; Jn 1:32-34; Mt 17:5 = Mk 9:7 = Lk 9:35; Ps 2:7; Isa 42:1). The Father loves the Son (Jn 3:35; 5:20). Jesus spoke of "my Father" as a unique relationship not shared by others (Lk 2:49; Mt 16:17). Cf.
Mt 7:21; 10:32; 10:33; 12:50; 18:10,19; 20:23; 25:34; 26:29,39,42,53; Lk 15:18; 22:29; 24:49; Jn 2:16; 5:43; 10:25; 14:2; 15:10; 5:17; 6:32,40; 8:38,49,54; 10:18,29,37; 14:20,21,23; 15:1,8,15,23,24; 20:17. The Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father (Jn 10:38; 14:10).
No one truly knows the Father as does the Son (Mt 11:27; Lk 10:22). Jesus, the Son of God, was to be glorified (Jn 11:4).
- Father
Jesus spoke of God as "my Father" in a unique sense (Mt 7:21; 10:32-33; 12:50; 16:17; 18:10,19; 20:23; 25:34; 26:39, 42, 53; Lk 10:22; 22:29; 24:49; Jn 5:17; 6:32, 40; 8:38,49,54; 10:18,29,37; 14:20-21,23; 15:1,8,15,23-24; 20:17; Rev 2:27; 3:5,21). The Jewish religious leaders rightly realised that what Jesus meant by calling God His Father, was that He was equal in nature with God (Jn 5:18. Jesus the Son and the Father are one (Jn 10:30). Which the Jews rightly understood that Jesus claimed to be God. (Jn 10:33). Cf. Jn 19:7. Yet Jehovah has no equal to Him (Isa 40:25). To know Jesus is to know the Father (Jn 8:19. Cf. Jn 14:7,9; 16:3; 1Jn 2:23).
- Mighty God
Jesus is the Mighty God [Heb. 'el gibbowr] (Isa 9:6-7. Cf. Mt 4:13-16; Lk 1:32-33). But Jehovah is the Mighty God [Heb. 'el gibbowr] (Isa 10:20-21; Jer 32:18).
- Second Person of Trinity
All three Persons of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, are present at Jesus' incarnation (Lk 1:35) and baptism (Mt 3:16-17; Mk 1:10-11; Lk 3:21-22; Jn 1:32-34). Son speaks the words of the Father by the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:35).
- Lord
Jesus is the Lord [Gk. kurios] (Lk 2:11). Indeed Jesus is the Lord [ho kurios] (Jn 4:1; Mt 21:3; Mk 5:19; 11:3; Lk 7:13; 10:1,39,41; 13:15; 22:61; 24:34); [ton kurion] (Lk 7:19; Jn 11:2); [to kurio] (Lk 17:5) and [tou kuriou] (Mk 16:20). Jesus called Himself "the Lord" [ho kurios] (Mt 21:3; Mk 11:3; Lk 19:34) and "your Lord" (Mt 24:42; Jn 13:13-14). A leper worshipped Jesus, fell down before Him, and called Him "Lord," and Jesus accepted that title and worship (Mt 8:2-3 = Mk 1:40-43 = Lk 5:12-13). A Greek woman fell down at Jesus feet and called Him "Lord," but Jesus did not rebuke her (Mt 15:22-28 = Mk 7:25-29). To tell what the Lord has done is to tell what Jesus has done (Mk 5:19-20; Lk 8:39). Jesus is David's Lord (Mt 22:41-46 = Mk 12:35-37 = Lk 20:41-44; Ps 110:1). Yet the divine Name (Heb. YHWH, "Yahweh") was translated nearly 7,000 times by Gk. kurios, "Lord," in the Septuagint (LXX), the Greek translation of the Old Testament in widespread use in the 1st century, and the Bible of the earliest Christians.
- Lord Lord [Gk. Kyrie Kyrie]
On the Day of Judgment, Jesus will be acknowledged as "Lord Lord" [Gk. Kyrie Kyrie] (Mt 7:21-22; 25:11; Lk 6:46), which is equivalent to "Lord Jehovah" [Heb. 'Adonay Yehovah]. Cf. Gn 15:2; Ex 23:17; Dt 3:24; Jos 7:7; Jdg 6:22; 2Sam 7:18; 1Ki 2:26; Ps 71:5; Isa 7:7; Jer 1:6; Eze 2:4; Am 1:8; Ob 1:1; Mic 1:2; Zep 1:7; Zec 9:14.
- Lord of the sabbath
Jesus is Lord of the sabbath (Mt 12:8; Mk 2:28; Lk 6:5). But it was Jehovah who instituted the sabbath commandment (Ex 20:8-11; 31:12-16; 35:1-3; Lev 23:1-3; Dt 5:6,12-14).
- I AM (Gk. ego eimi)
Jesus is I AM (Mt 14:27; Mk 6:50; Jn 6:20). He is I AM the light of the world (Jn 8:12; 9:5). But I AM is Jehovah (Ex 3:14-15; Isa 41:4; 46:4), God (Mt 22:31-32; Mk 12:26; Lk 20:37). Cf. Jn 8:28; 13:19; 18:5-6 [Gk. ego eimi, "I am" - no "he"]. Jesus is I AM the bread of life (Jn 6:35,48). He is I AM the living bread (Jn 6:51). Unless the Jews believed that Jesus is I AM, they would die in their sins (Jn 8:24). Before Abraham came into existence, Jesus is I AM (Jn 8:58). Jesus is I AM the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11,14). He is I AM the door (Jn 10:7,9). Jesus is I AM the resurrection and the life (Jn 11:25). He is I AM the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14:6). Cf. Jn 15:1,5.
- King
Jehovah is King forever (Ps 10:16); the great King above all (Ps 95:3). Jehovah will be King of all the earth (Zec 14:9). Yet Jesus is the (ho Basileus) King (Mt 25:34,40). He has received kingly authority to reign over all men (Lk 19:11-27). Yet "the King" is "the only God" (1Tim 1:17).
- King of Israel
Jesus is the King of the Jews (Mt 2:2; 27:11,29,37; Mk 15:2,9,12,18,26; Lk 23:3,37,38; Jn 18:33,39; 19:3,19,21). He is the King of Israel (Mt 27:42; Mk 15:32; Jn 1:49; 12:13. He publicly showed this by fulfilling the prophecy that Israel's king would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey (Mt 21:4-5; Jn 12:14-15; Isa 62:11; Zec 9:9). Jesus accepted His disciples' claim that He was "the King who comes in the name of the Lord" (Lk 19:37-40). Jesus is now reigning over Israel (Lk 1:33).
- Throne
Jesus is the predicted ruler on David's throne (Mt 2:6 = Mic 5:2; 2Sam 5:2). He is reigning on King David's throne (Lk 1:32; Isa 9:7; Rev 3:7). Cf.
Mt 22:44; 26:64; Mk 12:36; 14:62; 16:19; Lk 20:42; 22:69; Acts 2:25,33,34; 5:31; 7:55-56; Rom 8:34; Eph 1:20; Col 3:1; Heb 1:3,13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1Pet 3:22 & Heb 1:8; 12:2; Rev 5:13. Jesus will come with all the angels and sit on His glorious throne (Mt 19:28; 25:31).
- Kingdom
- Jesus' kingdom
God the Father conferred on Jesus a kingdom (Lk 22:29 NIV).
- Everlasting
Jesus' kingdom will never end (Lk 1:33). Cf.
2Sam 7:16; Ps 45:6; 89:3-4; Isa 9:7; Jer 33:17; Dn 2:44; 7:14,27; Mic 4:7; Heb 1:8; Rev 11:15.
- Kingdom of heaven
Jesus has the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:19. Cf. Rev 3:7 = Isa 22:22).
- Kingdom of God
Jesus' kingdom is God's kingdom (Mt 16:28. Cf. Mk 9:1 & Lk 9:27). Jesus will implement the Father's decision who inherits God's kingdom (Mt 20:23; 25:33-34).
- Son of Man
Jesus is the Son of Man (Mt 8:20; 11:19; 12:32; Jn 9:35-37). Who has authority on earth to forgive sins (Mt 9:6. Cf. Lk 7:47-49); authority to execute judgment (Jn 5:27); is Lord of the sabbath (Mt 12:8); who fulfills Old Testament prophecy (Mt 12:40); who sows the good seed (Mt 13:37); who sows the good seed (Mt 10:23); who gives eternal life (Jn 6:27); who will come again (Mt 24:27,30,37,39,44; 25:31; Mk 13:26; Lk 12:40; 21:27); and send forth His angels to gather the wicked (Mt 13:41) and the elect (Mt 24:31; Mk 13:27). Jesus, the Son of man is glorified in His death (Jn 13:31-32). Cf. Mt 16:13,27,28; 17:9,12,22; 18:11; 19:28; Mt 26:2,24,45,64; Mk 2:10,28; 8:31,38; 9:9,12,31; 10:33,45; 13:34; Mk 14:21,41,62; Lk 5:24; 6:5,22; 7:34; 9:22,26,44,56,58; 11:30; 12:8,10,40; 17:22,24,26,30; 18:8,31; 19:10; Lk 21:27,36; 22:22,48,69; 24:7; Jn 1:51; 3:13-14; 6:27,53; 6:62; 8:28; 12:23,34; Ac 7:56; Heb 2:6; Rev 1:13; 14:14). That is, the "one like unto a son of man" in one of Daniel's visions (Dn 7:13-14) who "came with the clouds of heaven," was brought before God, who gave Him, "dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." As the Son of Man, Jesus had the authority to forgive sins (Mt 9:6 = Mk 2:10 = Lk 5:26. Cf. Lk 7:47-49).
- Holy One of God
Jesus is "the Holy One of God" (Mk 1:24 = Lk 4:34. Cf. Jn 6:69; Jn 2:20; Lk 1:35; Ac 2:31; 3:14; 13:35; Ps 16:10). Yet Jehovah is
"the Holy One" (Hos 11:9) and "the Holy One of Israel" (2Ki 19:22; Ps 89:18; Isa 1:4; 5:24; 10:20, 41:14,16,20; Jer 51:5). Also God is "the Holy One" (Job 6:10; Ps 71:22; Isa 5:16) and "the Holy One of Israel" (Ps 78:41).
- Owner
- Israel
Israel is Jesus' own. He will save his people, Israel (Mt 1:21). The Word came to His own house (Jn 1:10). Yet Israel is Jehovah's people (Ex 3:7; Lev 26:12-13; 1Sam 9:15-16; 2Sam 7:8; 1Ki 14:7; 2Ki 20:5, etc), Jehovah's own possession (Dt 7:6; 14:2; 26:18) whom He will save (Ps 130:8). Jesus had often wanted to gather Jerusalem's children together, as a hen gathers her chicks (Mt 23:37; Lk 13:34).
- Master
Jesus is "master [Gk. kyrios] of the house" (Mk 13:35); "master [Gk. kyrios] of those servants" with whom they must settle accounts (Mt 25:14-30). Cf. Mt 24:45-51; 25:18-20. Yet Jehovah is the Master who the eyes of His servants look to (Ps 123:2; Mal 1:6).
- Bridegroom
Jesus is "the bridegroom" (Mt 9:15 = Mk 2:19-20 = Lk 5:34-35). Cf. Mt 25:1-13; Jn 3:29; Eph 5:23-32; Rev 21:2,9; 22:17. But God or Jehovah is the bridegroom (Isa 62:5; Jer 2:32; 3:1; Hos 2:19).
- Shepherd
Jesus is the predicted Shepherd of Israel (Mt 2:6 = Mic 5:2; 2Sam 5:2; Zec 13:7). He is "the shepherd of the sheep" (Jn 10:2); "the Shepherd" (Mt 26:31 = Zec 13:7). Jesus is I AM the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11,14). There is one flock of Jews and Gentiles, under the one Shepherd, Jesus (Jn 10:16). Cf. Mt 9:36; 25:32; Mk 6:34; 14:27; Heb 13:20; 1Pet 2:25; 5:4; Rev 7:17. Jesus' sheep hear His voice and follow Him (Jn 10:27). As a shepherd, Jesus will separate the sheep (the righteous) from the goats (the cursed) (Mt 25:32,37,41). Yet it was Jehovah who Himself was be the shepherd of His sheep (Eze 34:15; Ps 23:1).
- Saviour
Jesus is Saviour (Lk 2:11; Lord and Saviour (2Pet 1:11; 3:2; 2:20; 3:18); God and Saviour (Tit 2:13; 2Pet 1:1). Cf. Jn 4:42; Ac 5:31; 13:23; Eph 5:23; Php 3:20; 2Tim 1:10; Tit 1:4; 3:6; 1Jn 4:14). But God is Saviour (Lk 1:47; 1Tim 1:1; 2:3; 4:10; Tit 1:3; 2:10; 3:4; Jude 1:25); and Jehovah is the only Saviour (Isa 45:21; 43:3,11; Hos 13:4).
- OLD TESTAMENT PASSAGES ABOUT JEHOVAH APPLIED TO JESUS [top]
The Old Testament testifies about Jesus (Jn 5:39). Moses and the prophets wrote about Jesus (Jn 1:45; 5:46). Jesus is The Prophet that Moses predicted would come (Dt 18:15,18; Jn 1:21; Ac 3:22; 7:37). Cf. Lk 24:27,44; Ac 13:27).
- Jesus is Jehovah seen
Old Testament appearances of Jehovah (e.g. Gn 12:7; 17:1; 18:1; 26:2,24; Ex 6:3; Isa 6:5), and of God (e.g. Gn 32:30; 35:9; Jdg 13:22), were all of the pre-incarnate Jesus (Jn 1:18), because no man has ever seen the Father (Jn 5:37; 6:46). Cf. Ex 33:20; 1Tim 6:16; 1Jn 4:12. Jesus is Jehovah whose glory Isaiah saw (Jn 12:37-41; Isa 6:1-10). To see Jesus is to see God (Jn 12:45). Cf. Jn 14:9; 2Cor 4:6
- Jehovah who came was Jesus
John the Baptist was the prophesied messenger sent to prepare the way for the coming of Jehovah, who was Jesus (Mt 3:1-3; Mk 1:2-4; Lk 1:76; 3:2-6; Jn 1:23 = Isa 40:3; Mal 3:1). Jesus Himself stated this (Mt 11:10; Lk 7:27 = Mal 3:1). That is, John the Baptist was Jehovah's "messenger," whom Jehovah said would come to "prepare the way before me," but the "me" who came was Jesus! He is "the Lord" (Heb. 'adown = Jehovah (Zec 4:14; 6:5) whom the Israelites "seek," who "will suddenly come to his temple" (Mal 3:1). Jesus is "the messenger of the covenant" (Ex 23:20; 3:2; Isa 63:9; Jer 31:31; Eze 37:26) whom the Israelites "desire" and who will "come." (Hag 2:7; Mal 3:1). Jesus' visitation [Gk episkope "inspection"] of Jerusalem was God's (Lk 19:44. Cf.
Lk 1:68, 78; 7:16; 1Pet 2:12; Isa 10:3; Jer 8:12; 10:15; 11:23; 23:12; 46:21; 48:44; 50:27; 51:18; Hos 9:7; Mic 7:4).
- JESUS HAS ATTRIBUTES OF JEHOVAH [top]
- Eternal
As the pre-incarnate Word (Gk. Logos), Jesus in the beginning already was (Jn 1:1-2,14). Jesus' origin is from everlasting (Mt 2:4-6 = Mic 5:2). Before Abraham came into existence, Jesus is I AM (Jn 8:58).Yet Jehovah is the the eternal God (Gn 21:33; Dt 33:27), the One who inhabits eternity (Isa 57:15,19), who is from everlasting (1Chr 16:36; Neh 9:5; Ps 41:13; 103:17; 106:48; Hab 1:12).
- Pre-existent
Jesus is "before" John the Baptist (Jn 1:15), even though He was six months younger (Lk 1:36).
- Life
As the eternal Word become flesh, Jesus has life in itself (Jn 1:4,14. Cf. Jn 5:26; 6:57; 11:26; 14:6; 17:3; Ac 3:15; Heb 7:16; 1Jn 1:1-2; 5:11,20; Rev 1:18). But life itself belongs only to Jehovah (Dt 30:20; Job 10:12; 33:4; Ps 16:11; 27:1; 36:9). Jesus gives life to whom He wills (Jn 5:21). But only Jehovah God who gives life (Job 33:4; Ecc 12:7; Neh 9:6) and raises the dead (2Ki 5:7; Rom 4:17; 2Cor 1:9; Jn 11:25-26). He is the bread of life (Jn 6:35.
- Living water
Jesus is the source of living water (Jn 4:10-11; 7:38). Cf. Rev 7:17. But Jehovah is the source of living water (Jer 2:13; 17:13; Zec 14:8).
- Eternal life
Whoever hears Jesus' word has eternal life (Jn 5:24). Even Jews who already believed in Jehovah must come to Jesus to have eternal life (Jn 5:40). Jesus gives eternal life (Jn 6:27). Whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life (Jn 6:40). Whoever metaphorically `eats' Jesus the living bread, will live forever (Jn 6:51).Whoever metaphorically `eats' Jesus' flesh and `drinks' His blood, has eternal life (Jn 6:54). Jesus gives eternal life to His sheep (Jn 10:28)
- Spiritual life
The spiritually dead who hears Jesus' voice will live (Jn 5:25).
- Sovereignty
Jesus is above all (Jn 3:31). Yet Jehovah is above all (1Ch 29:11; Ps 95:3; 97:9; 113:4; 135:5). The Father has given all things into the Son's hands (Jn 3:35; 13:3). The Father has delivered all things to the Son (Mt 11:27; Lk 10:22). Cf.
Mt 28:18; Jn 3:35; 17:2; 1Cor 15:27; Eph 1:20-22; Php 2:9-10. Cf. Dn 7:13-14; Jn 17:2; 1Cor 15:27; Eph 1:20-22; Php 2:9-10. The authorities could not arrest Jesus until it was His time to let them do so (Jn 7:30,44; 8:20. Cf. Lk 4:28-30). Jesus alone had the power to lay down His life and take it up again (Jn 10:17-18).
- Light
Jesus is the true light that enlightens every man (Jn 1:9). Jesus is the "great light" predicted by the prophet Isaiah Mt 4:15-16; Isa 9:1-2). He is the light of the world (Jn 8:12; 9:5; 12:46). Jesus is the light who we are to believe in, that we may become ourselves lights in the darkness (Jn 12:35-36). Whoever believes in Jesus will not remain in darkness (Jn 12:46). Cf. Jn 1:4-5,7-7; 3:19; 2Cor 4:6; Rev 21:23). Yet God is light (1Jn 1:5); it is in Jehovah's light that we see light (Ps 36:9); "Jehovah is my light" (Ps 27:1), "an everlasting light" (Isa 60:19-20).
- Glory
Jesus, as the Word became flesh, and dwelt [Gk. eskenoosen, "tabernacled," "dwelt in a tent"] among men and revealed His glory (Jn 1:14; 2:11. Cf. Isa 35:2; 40:5; 66:18). This alludes to the OT tabernacle or tent of meeting (Gk. skenoo,
Ac 7:44; Heb 8:5; 9:2; Rev 21:3), in which Jehovah's glory dwelled (Ex 40:34-35; Lev 9:23; Num 14:10; 16:19,42; 20:6). Cf.
Lk 9:32; Jn 2:11; 11:40; 17:5; 1Cor 2:8; 2Cor 4:4,6; Eph 1:12,14; 3:21; 2Th 2:14; 2Tim 4:18; Heb 1:3; 13:21; 1Pet 4:11; 2Pet 1:3; 3:18; Rev 1:6; 5:12-13. In the Transfiguration, Jesus revealed His glory (Mt 17:2; Mk 9:2; Lk 9:29,32; Jn 1:14; 2Pet 1:17). Jesus will return in the glory of His Father (Mt 16:27 = Mk 8:38 = Lk 9:26). Jesus was to be glorified (Jn 11:4). In His death, reesurrection and His sending of the Holy Spirit and the manifold fruit it will bear (Jn 7:39; 12:16,23). God the Father glorified Jesus (Jn 8:54; 12:28). Jesus is glorified in His death (Jn 13:31-32). Cf. Jn 14:13; 16:14; 17:1,5,10; Ac 3:13; Rom 8:17; 15:17; 2Th 1:10,12; 3:1. But Jehovah will not give His glory to another (Isa 42:8).
- Omniscient
- Jesus knew all men
Jesus knew what was in all men (Jn 2:24-25). He knew the thoughts of others from a distance. While He was still in Bethany-beyond-Jordan (Jn 1:28-29), Jesus saw Nathanael in Bethsaida, Gallilee (Jn 1:43-45), a distance of about 120 kms (75 miles), under a fig tree, and discerned his innermost thoughts (Jn 1:45-50). Jesus knew the marital history of an obscure Samaritan women whom He had never met (Jn 4:17-19,29). He knew that a man by the pool at Bethesda had been ill for 38 years (Jn 5:5-6). Jesus perceived in His spirit the thoughts of the scribes and Pharisees (Mt 9:4 = Mk 2:8 = Lk 5:22; 6:8). Jesus was aware of the Pharisees' plotting together to kill him (Mt 12:14-15). Of the contents of their murmurring among themselves (Jn 6:41-43). Cf. Mt 12:25; Jn 6:15,64; 13:11; 16:30; 21:17; Rev 2:23. But it is Jehovah alone (1 Ki 8:39) who searches every heart and understands every motive behind thoughts (1Chr 28:9); who knows the thoughts of man (Ps 94:11), who searches, knows and understands man's thoughts and his every action (Ps 139:1-2; Pr 24:12; 2Ki 19:27; Jer 12:3; 17:10). God knows men's hearts (Ps 44:21; 139:23; Lk 16:15; Acts 15:8).
- Jesus knew all things
Jesus knew the location of fish in the deep water of a lake (Lk 5:1-11). Jesus in Perea knew when Lazarus had died in Bethany, three days' journey distant (Jn 10:40;11:14).
- Omnipresent
Wherever disciples are gatherings together, Jesus is in their midst (Mt 18:20).
- Omnipotent
No one can snatch Jesus' sheep out of His hand (Jn 10:28).
- Holy
Jesus is holy (Lk 1:35). He is the Holy One of God. Jesus is sinless (Jn 8:46). He will not be included in the judgment that for "every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account" (Mt 12:36).Yet there is none other than Jehovah who is holy (1Sam 2:2). Cf. Jehovah is holy (Lev 11:44-45; 16:2; 19:2; 20:26; Ps 99:5,9; Isa 6:3); His name is holy (Ps 103:1; 105:3; 106:47; 145:21; Eze 20:39; 36:20,22; 39:7,25); He is a holy God (Josh 24:19; 1Sam 6:20); Jehovah is the Holy One (Pr 9:10; Isa 5:16; 49:7; Hab 1:12); the Holy One of Israel (Ps 89:18; Isa 1:4; 5:24; 10:20; 29:19; 30:15; 31:1; 41:14,16,20; 43:3,14,15; 45:11; 47:4; 48:17; 54:5; 55:5; 60:9,14; Jer 50:29; 51:5). Jesus is good, but only God is good (Mt 19:16-17; Mk 10:17-18; Lk 18:18-19); Jesus distinguished Himself from all other men who "are evil" (Mt 7:11; Lk 11:13); In Jesus is no falsehood (Jn 7:18). But only God is true (Jn 8:26,46).
- Authority
Jesus taught with absolute authority (Mt 7:28; Mk 1:22; Lk 4:32). He did not say, "thus says Jehovah" but "I say" (Mt 5:22,28,32,34,39,44;11:22,24; 12:6; 17:12; 19:9; Mk 9:13; Lk 6:27) because He is Jehovah! Jesus declared that John the Baptist was the last Old Testament prophet and therefore effectively that the Old Testament era had ended (Mt 11:13 = Lk 16:16).
- Power
Jesus had the power of Jehovah to heal (Lk 5:17).
- Great
Jesus is greater than the temple, the prophet Jonah (and by implication all the prophets) and greater than King Solomon (and by implication all the Kings of Israel) (Mt 12:6,41-42).
- Angels
Jesus is not an angel. He is "the Son" distinct from "the angels of heaven" (Mt 24:36; Mk 13:32). Cf. Heb 1:4-5. The angels are Jesus'. He will come with all the angels (Mt 16:27; 24:30-31; 25:31. Cf. Zec 14:5; Jude 14). Which are "His angels" (Mt 16:27 = Mk 8:38 = Lk 9:26). Jesus will send forth His angels (Mt 13:41; 24:31; Mk 13:27). Yet the angels are God's (Lk 12:8,9; 15:10; Jn 1:51; Rev 3:5).
- JESUS DOES WORKS OF JEHOVAH [top]
- The Lord's (Jehovah's) works
What Jesus did was what Jehovah did (Mk 5:19-20).
- God's works
Jesus' works are the Father's works (Jn 5:19).
- God's words
Jesus' words are the Father's words (Jn 8:28; 12:49).
- Commandments
Jesus gave commandments. By improving on the Law of Moses: "You have heard" in the Law, but "I say..." (Mt 5:21-22,27-28,31-32,33-34,38-39,43-44; 12:5-6; 19:8-9). Cf. Mt 11:21-24; 17:11-12; Mk 9:12-13; Lk 6:26-27; 1Cor 7:25; 14:37; 2Th 3:4; 2Pet 3:2. Jesus gave a new commandment: "that you (His disciples) love one another, as I have loved you." (Jn 13:34-35).
- Creation
All things were created through Jesus (Jn 1:3), including the world (Jn 1:10). Yet Jehovah alone made all things (Isa 44:24), by His own hands (Isa 45:12; 66:2). Jehovah created (Gn 2:4; Isa 42:5; 45:18), and made (Gn 2:4; Ex 20:11; 2Ki 19:15; 2Ch 2:12; Neh 9:6; Ps 121:2; Isa 37:16; Jer 32:17) the heaven and the earth.
- Miracles
Jesus' miracles or signs revealed His glory (Jn 2:11). His works were sufficient for belief in Him (Jn 10:38). Jesus' first sign was turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana, Galilee (Jn 2:7-11). He did "signs" in Jerusalem at the Passover feast and many believed in Him because of them (Jn 2:23. Cf. Jn 4:46-54; 6:2,14; 7:31; 9:16; 10:41; 11:47; 12:18,37; 20:30). Proved that God was with Jesus (Jn 3:2; 9:33).
- Nature miracles
Jesus knew the location of a huge school of fish in the deep water of Lake Genneseret (Sea of Galilee) (Lk 5:1-10), and this may have included bringing the fish together to that location. Jesus commanded a storm on the Sea of Galilee to be still and and it immediatedly became calm (Mt 8:24-27; Mk 4:37-41; Lk 8:22-25). But it is Jehovah God alone who commands the sea and it obeys Him (Job 38:8-11; Ps 65:5-7; 89:8-9; 107:23-30). Jesus fed a crowd of over five thousand by multiplying five loaves of bread and two fish (Mt 14:15-21; Mk 6:35-44; Lk 9:12-17; Jn 6:5-14; and another crowd of four thousand by multiplying seven loaves of bread and a few small fish.(Mt 15:32-38; Mk 8:1-9). But it was Jehovah who through Elisha multiplied twenty loaves of bread and ears of grain to feed a hundred (2Ki 4:42-44). Jesus walked on a stormy sea (Mt 14:25-27; Mk 6:48-51; Jn 6:18-21). Yet it is God who treads the waves of the sea (Job 9:8; Ps 77:19). Jesus from a distance ensured that the next fish Peter caught would have a shekel in its mouth (Mt 17:27). Jesus cursed a fig tree and it withered overnight (Mt 21:19-20; Mk 11:13-14, 20-21).
- Healing miracles
Jesus had the power of Jehovah to heal (Lk 5:17). Jesus' did works of healing that no one else had ever done (Jn 9:32) He did many and varied miracles of healing, including of those sick, afficted with various diseases, pains, demon-possesed, epileptics and paralysed (Mt 4:23-24; blindness, deafness, lameness, leprosy, and death (Mt 11:5 = Lk 7:22). Cf.
Mt 8:7-8,13; 8:16; 9:35; 10:1,8; 13:15; 14:14; 15:28,30; 19:2; 21:14; Mk 1:34; 3:10; 5:29; 6:5; 6:13; Lk 4:23,40; 5:5,15,17,31; 7:7; 8:2,43,47; 9:2,6,11,42; 10:9; 13:14; 14:3,4; 17:15; 22:51; Jn 4:47; 12:40; Ac 4:30; 9:34). Jesus healed leprosy (Mt 8:2-3 = Mk 1:40-43 = Lk 5:12-13. Cf.
Mt 10:8; 11:5; Lk 17:12-14); paralysis (Mt 9:2-8 = Mk 2:3-12 = Lk 5:18-26); fever (Mt 8:14-15; Mk 1:29-31; Lk 4:38-39); long-term invalidity (Jn 5:3-9); a withered hand (Mt 12:10,13; Mk 3:1,5; Lk 6:6,10); a woman's long-term haemorrhage (Mt 9:20-22 = Mk 5:25-34 = Lk 8:43-48); blindness (Mt 9:27-30; Mk 8:22-25; Jn 9:1-7; Mt 20:30-34 = Mk 10:46-52 = Lk 18:35-43); deaf and dumbness (Mk 7:32-37); seizures (Mt 17:15-18 = Mk 9:17-27 = Lk 9:38-43). Jesus healed at a distance (Mt 8:5-13 = Lk 7:1-10; Jn 4:43-53), including casting out a demon (Mt 15:22-28 = Mk 7:25-29). Jesus healed the "blind, dumb, maimed, and many others" (Mt 15:30). Jesus healed them all (Mt 12:15; Lk 6:17-19). Jesus raised the dead (JMt 11:5 = Lk 7:22): the widow of Nain's son (Lk 7:11-17); Jewish ruler Jairus' daughter (Mt 9:18,23-26 = Mk 5:22-24,35-43 = Lk 8:41-42,49-56) and Lazarus (Jn 11:38-44). He casted out demons (Mt 9:32-33; Mk 1:23-27; Lk 4:33-36; 6:18). Demons causing dumbness (Lk 11:14); blindness and dumbness (Mt 12:22). Cf. Mt 4:24; 8:16; 8:31-32; 12:22-25; 26-28; 15:21-28; 17:14-18; Mk 1:34,39; 5:1-15; 7:26-30; 8:12-13; 16:9; Lk 4:41; 8:2; 8:32-33; 9:42; 10:17; 11:13-15; 13:32. Merely touching Jesus' garments caused power to flow from Him to heal (Mt 14:35-36; Mk 5:25-30; 6:55-56; Lk 6:19). Yet it is Jehovah who heals (Ex 15:26; Num 12:13; 2Ki 2:21; 2Ki 20:5,8; 2Ch 30:20; Ps 6:2; 30:2; 41:4; Isa 19:22; 30:26; 57:19; 58:8; Jer 17:14; 30:17; Hos 6:1).
- Forgiveness of sins
Jesus forgave sins (Mt 9:2 = Mk 2:5 = Lk 5:20. Jesus forgave the sins of a sinful woman who wet His feet with her tears and anointed them with ointment (Lk 7:47-49). As the Son of Man, Jesus had the authority to forgive sins (Mt 9:6 = Mk 2:10 = Lk 5:26). But only God could forgive sins (Mt 9:3 = Mk 2:6-7 = Lk 5:21; Lk 7:49). Cf. Ps 103:12; Isa 1:18; 43:25; 55:7; Jer 31:34; Mic 7:19).
- Church
Jesus builds His own church, or called out people of God (Mt 16:18. Cf. Act 20:28; 1Cor 12:28; 15:9; Gal 1:13; Eph 1:22; 2:20; Php 3:6; 1Tim 3:15). The same word Gk. ekklesia was used in the LXX of the assembly of Jehovah's people (Dt 4:10; 23:2, etc). Cf. Ac 7:38; Heb 2:12, etc). Jesus would gather into one the scattered children of God (Jn 11:52). The elect are His (Mt 24:31; Mk 13:27).
- Sends prophets, etc
Jesus sends prophets, wise men and scribes (Mt 23:34; Lk 11:49). But it is Jehovah who sends prophets (2Ch 24:19; Jer 25:4; 29:19).
- Second coming
Jesus' second coming will be Jehovah's coming. Jesus will return in the glory of His Father (Mt 16:27 = Mk 8:38 = Lk 9:26). It will be the Day of the Son of Man (Lk 17:24,30; Mt 24:27). All on earth will see Jesus, the Son of Man, coming on the clouds of heaven with great power and glory (Mt 24:30 = Mk 13:26 = Lk 21:27). Cf. Dn 7:13-14; Zec 12:10-12; Mt 26:64; Mk 14:62; Lk 21:27; Rev 1:7
- Resurrection of the dead
The dead will hears Jesus' voice and be resurrected (Jn 5:25); both those who have done good and those who have done evil (Jn 5:28). Jesus will raise whoever believes in Him on the last day (Jn 6:39,40,54).
- Judgment
The Father has entrusted all judgment to His Son, Jesus (Jn 5:22). Jesus has been given the sole authority to judge because He is the Son of man (Jn 5:27). His judgment is just (Jn 5:28). Cf.
Jn 8:50; 9:39; Ac 10:42; Rom 2:16; 2Cor 5:10; 2Tim 4:1). Whoever hears Jesus' words will be judged according to whether he kept them (Jn 12:47-48). Cf. Jn 3:17-19; 5:22-30; 8:15-16; 8:50; 12:31; 16:7-11. All the nations will be gathered before Jesus' throne of judgment (Mt 25:32). But only Jehovah God is the judge of all the earth (Gn 18:25; 1Chr 16:33; Ps 96:13; 98:9) and the wicked (Mal 3:5). And it is Jehovah, who all the nations will be gathered before, for judgment (Joel 3:1-2).
- Day of Judgment
On the Day of Judgment it is Jesus to whom we all will have to give account of our works (Mt 7:22-23. Cf. Mt 24:36; Lk 10:12; 21:34; 2Tim 1:18; 4:8).
- Separation of righteous from wicked
Jesus will separate the wheat from the chaff (Mt 3:12; Lk 3:17); the sheep from the goats (Mt 25:32). But it was Jehovah who judged His flock between sheep and goats (Eze 34:17).
- Rewards
Jesus will gather His wheat into His granary (Mt 3:12; Lk 3:17). Jesus will reward each person for what he has done (Mt 16:27). Cf. 2Cor 5:10; Rev 22:12. The basis for eternal rewards is one's attitude to Jesus in His followers (Mt 25:34-40,46). Cf. Mk 9:41; Mt 10:40-42; Acts 9:4; 22:6; 26:14; 1Jn 3:10-17; 4:20-21). But it is God who will reward each person for what he has done (2Chr 6:23; Job 34:11; Ps 62:12; Pr 24:12; Jer 17:10; Rom 2:5-6; 2Tim 4:14; 1Pet 1:17; Rev 20:12-13).
- Condemnation
Jesus to decide who is to be eternally condemned (Mt 7:22-23).
- Punishment
Jesus will Himself burn the chaff with unquenchable fire (Mt 3:12; Lk 3:17). Jesus Himself will pronounce the final judgment of eternal punishment or eternal life (Mt 25:46). The basis for eternal punishment is one's attitude to Jesus: in His followers (Mt 25:41-46).
- Salvation
Jesus is the door - only through Him can one be saved (Jn 10:9).
- JESUS RECEIVES HONOR & WORSHIP DUE TO JEHOVAH [top]
- Worship
Only Jehovah God was to be worshipped [Gk. proskuneo] (Mt 4:10 = Lk 4:8, Dt 6:13).
- Jesus was worshipped
Jesus was worshipped [Gk. proskuneo] by the magi" (Mt 2:2,11). Jesus was worshipped by the disciples. Peter fell down before Jesus after experiencing Jesus' miracle of the huge catch of fish were and confessed his sense of sinfulness in the presence of Jesus (Lk 5:8-10) as Old Testament saints did in the presence of God (Gn 18:27; Job 42:5-6; Isa 6:5). A leper worshipped Jesus, fell down before Him, and called Him "Lord," and Jesus accepted that worship (Mt 8:2-3 = Mk 1:40-43 = Lk 5:12-13). A Greek woman fell down at Jesus feet and called Him "Lord," but Jesus did not rebuke her (Mt 15:22-28 = Mk 7:25-29). The disciples worshipped Jesus as the Son of God (Mt 14:33). Jesus was worshipped as the Son of Man (Jn 9:35-38; Dn 7:13-14).
- Belief in
Belief in Jesus necessary for eternal life (Jn 3:14-15,16,36; 5:24; 6:40,47; 11:25; 20:31; Ac 13:48; 1Tim 1:16; 1Jn 5:13). Yet Abraham believed in Jehovah and it was reckoned it to him for righteousness (Gn 15:6), and that belief in Jehovah is equivalent to belief in Jesus (Rom 4:3; Gal 3:6; Jas 2:23). Belief in Jesus is belief in God (Jn 12:44). The disciples put their faith in Jesus because of His miracles (Jn 2:11. Cf. Ex 14:31). Whoever believes in Jesus will not spiritually hunger or thirst (Jn 6:35; 7:38). Whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life (Jn 6:40). Whoever believes in Jesus, though he die the first death, yet shall he live eternally; and never die the second, eternal death (Jn 11:25-26). Cf. Rev 2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8. Jesus is the light who we are to believe in, that we may become ourselves lights in the darkness (Jn 12:35-36). Whoever believes in Jesus will not remain in darkness (Jn 12:46). The work of God is to believe in Jesus (Jn 6:29). Jesus demanded belief in Him as well as belief in God (Jn 14:1). Yet Jehovah alone was to be believed in (Gn 15:6; Ex 14:31; Num 14:11; Dt 1:32; 9:23; 2Ki 17:14; 2Chr 20:20; Isa 43:10).
- Know
Personal knowledge of Jesus is necessary to avoid eternal condemnation (Mt 7:22-23).
- Come to
All must come to Jesus to have eternal life (Jn 5:40; 6:37,44,65; 7:37). Cf. Mt 11:28; Jn 6:37,44,65; 7:37; 1Pet 2:4). Whoever comes to Jesus will not spiritually hunger or thirst (Jn 6:35).
- Acknowledged
Jesus is to be acknowledged (Mt 10:32-33; Lk 12:8-9, echoing the very words that Jehovah said He was to be acknowledged (1Sam 2:30).
- Disciples
Jesus demanded of His disciples absolute and exclusive allegiance. One cannot be Jesus' disciple unless one's love for Him is by comparison "hate" of of his family and even his own life (Lk 14:26; Mt 10:37). A disciple of Jesus must bear his own cross of suffering and shame and come after Jesus (Lk 14:27; 9:23; Mt 10:38). One must give up everything he has to be Jesus' disciple. (Lk 14:33). Cf. Jn 12:25.
- Followed
Jesus demanded to be followed exclusively (Mt 10:32-38; 16:24 = Mk 8:34; Lk 9:23). His followers must be prepared to give up everything that prevents them from following Jesus: their possessions (Mt 19:21; Mk 10:21; Lk 18:22).Only those who follow Jesus will never walk in darkness and have the light of life (Jn 8:12). Yet it is Jehovah who must be exclusively followed (Num 14:43; 32:12; Dt 1:36; 7:4; Josh 14:8,9,14; 22:16,18,23,29; 1Sam 12:14,20;15:11; 1Ki 18:21; 2Ki 17:21; 18:6; 2Chr 25:27; 34:33; Isa 59:13; Hos 6:3).
- Obeyed
Jesus is to be obeyed (Lk 6:46; Mt 7:24). Jesus' words are to be done (Mt 7:26; Lk 6:49) But it is Jehovah who must be obeyed (Dt 13:4; 27:10; 30:2,8,10,20; 1Sam 15:22; Jer 3:13,25; 9:13; 26:13; 40:3; 42:6,21; Dn 9:10,14; Zec 6:15).
- Served
Jesus is to be served. We are to take His yoke of slavery upon us (Mt 11:28-30) and He will paradoxically give us rest. But it was Jehovah who gives His people rest (Ex 33:14; Dt 12:9-10; 25:19; Jos 1:13; 11:23; 21:44; 22:4; 23:1; 1Ki 8:56; Isa 63:14; Jer 6:16; 31:2; Heb 4:1-11).
- Works
Jesus' works are the Father's works (Jn 14:10).
Works to be done in Jesus' name (Mt 7:22).
- Father
Jesus never prayed to Jehovah, but to "Father" (Mt 11:25-26; 26:39, 42; Mk 14:36; Lk 10:22; Jn 11:41; 12:27-28; 14:16; 16:26; 17:1,5,11,21,24-25). And He taught His followers to pray to "Father," not "Jehovah" (Mt 6:9; Lk 11:2,13). Which they did (Rom 8:15; Eph 1:17; 3:14; 5:20; Col 1:3).
- Person
Not to be ashamed of Jesus' Person (Mk 8:38).
- Words
. Jesus' words are the Father's words (Jn 14:10).
Jesus' followers are not to be ashamed of His words (Mk 8:38). Jesus' words will never pass away (Mt 24:35 = Mk 13:31 = Lk 21:33). But it is the word of Jehovah that will stand forever (Isa 40:8; 1Pet 1:25).
- OBJECTIONS TO JESUS BEING JEHOVAH [top]
- Jesus spoke of Jehovah as though a different Person from Him
Jesus occasionally spoke as though Jehovah was a different Person from Him. However, some of these were where Jesus merely quoted from Old Testament passages that mentioned Jehovah (Mt 4:10; Lk 4:8 = Dt 6:13; Mt 4:7; Lk 4:12 = Dt. 6:16; Lk 4:18-19 = Isa 61:1-2) and Mt 22:37; Mk 12:30; Lk 10:27. Cf. Mt 22:31-32; Mk 12:26; Lk 20:37. Jesus quoted Ps 110 and stated this was Jehovah speaking to Christ to sit at His right hand (Mt 22:41-46 = Mk 12:35-37 = Lk 20:41-44; Ps 110:1). Jesus is the man who is Jehovah's fellow" (Mt 26:31 = Zec 13:7).
- Does not preclude the other two Persons of the Trinity, the Father and the Holy Spirit, being Jehovah
Jehovah God gave to Jesus the throne of David (Lk 1:32). However, that Jesus is Jehovah does not preclude the other two Persons of the Holy Trinity, the Father and the Holy Spirit, from being also known by the Name, Jehovah (see Introduction).
- Lack of omniscience
Occasionally Jesus asked questions as though He did not know some things. For example, He asked who touched Him in a crowd (Mk 5:30 = Lk 8:45); what others were saying He was (Mt 16:13); and what the disciples were discussing with the scribes in His absence (Mk 9:14-16). But this was either Jesus giving others the opportunity to make a personal response, or it could be a temporary self-limitation of Jesus' omniscience as an aspect of His self-emptying in taking upon Himself a human nature (Php 2:6-8; Heb 2:8-9). Jesus was the to be exalted Son of Man, yet in His self-humiliation at His first coming had "nowhere to lay His head" (Mt 8:20; Lk 9:58). Jesus did not know the day and hour of His second coming (Mt 24:36; Mk 13:32). Again, this may have been a temporary self-limitation of Jesus' omniscience (in Acts 1:7 after His resurrection, Jesus no longer says He does not know the date of the coming of His Kingdom), and/or since the Holy Spirit is not said to know with the Father the exact time of Jesus' return, it may reflect an actual limitation (or self-limitation) of knowledge within the Trinity on the part of the Son and Holy Spirit regarding the Father's plans, until He reveals them. .
