What has Tom
been up to since the end of the Inspirals, you might
have asked
yourself.
Well, at first he formed a new band with his
friend Jem Kelly,
guitarist with the Lotus Eaters.
Iain Kelly (drums)
and Chris Livsey (bass guitar) were also in
the group that called itself
'The Lovers'. Why that ? Here's Tom's explanation :
"The
band's called The Lovers because we're exploring all the
different
angles of love.
Not romantic love, but love as being dangerous or
something
that's outside."
They had
around fifteen very poetical songs, among them the single
"Work, Rest and Play",
dealing with the life of a teenage prostitute.
Other songs were
called "Happiness", "Broken
Wings" and "Inertia",
which are all included on
Tom's latest album. The band also had their
own
record label, "Poof Records", which was later changed
into "Mad
Dog Records".
The band
disbanded in the late '90s without having released an album.
After an acoustic album
and hundreds of solo gigs, Tom Hingley formed
a band also called
'The Lovers' in 2001 to support
him on his new electric
album "Soulfire" and on tour.
The people in the band are Jason Brown
(guitar), Kelly Wood (Farfisa keyboard), Steve Handley (bass
guitar) and
Paul Handley (drums).
By the way, the bass player and the drummer used
to be in the
legendary Mancunian band "The Fall".

"Soulfire" features many songs from the old
"Lovers" days, a few decent
in-betweeners from the years
between the "Lovers" and the acoustic
album, and new
songs.
