Author: Doug Green, March 2000

Abstract:This essay examines the London Underground map - perhaps the best known example of information design in practice. The map - designed in 1931 - has stood the test of time and has been copied by nearly every underground transport system in the world. It is relevant here because it represents a clarity and simplicity which provides a benchmark for communicating information through graphic design
