Hints and Tips

Team Gunn Parker's Hints and Tips

These are some tips and hints from our experiences Geocaching We hope that you will be able to use them.

Research Print Location Equipment

  • Research

  • Select the cache you will be looking for online, then if possible transfer the co-ordinates from the cache page to your GPS with a cable, use Ezygps. make sure that the co-ords in your GPS match those of the cache page.

  • Print

  • Print the cache page to take with you, We use a Palm PDA and download all of the cache page including hint's and logs to it, In the beginning we used Palm desktop and Geocliping, Geoclipping will "clip" all of the data from the cache page with out the banners and ad's, then paste all of that into the desktop memo which you can then print.

  • Location

  • Make sure that you know where you are going, read your maps carefully. Check to see where you are going to park your car especially near a river or a lake, park on the right side of a river this can save you a lot of driving and walking.

  • Equipment

  • For almost all of the caches you will search for you will need a GPS, we use an ETREX but there are lots of other GPS's available. We also use a compass to help with the search.

For example if you are walking along a track with your GPS and then you have to turn to the right and head straight into the thick bush with a lot of overhead cover take out your compass and site a line in the direction you need to go, if your GPS indicates that you need to walk 100 mts just follow the compass that distance then try to get a lock on the satellites again. it will not matter how slowly you are walking the compass will allways point the way.

Take and use fly repellant and sunscreen, we use a product 08636 that is the two items in one, wipe on the cream and get protected from the sun and flys
