Are you ready for some more war action?? WELL ARE YOU?? PUNK! Because if you aren't then
best pack your bags and head for a small coral island some place. Finding the demo of Call of
Duty, I thought I'd give it a bash and take some snaps along the way. The more astute of you may
realise that I have used the shareware version of hypersnap for these screenshots you see here.
While hypersnap shareware is good it puts that annoying "pay me now" message in the top Left corner
of the screen and also chooses to include the mouse pointer in every snap. Yeah...Great. That aside
Lets get into the demo and what it shows of the game. Not so many screenshots this time around,
I'm really trying to cut down on article production time to get them done in a reasonable amount
  of time.
Dear Diary... I am Dead.. Forgot your Controls? I think NOT!! Walk in the PARK!!

The very first thing you notice is how EXTREMELY this game looks like Medal of Honour Allied Assault.
As soon as I started the demo I could have been in a mission pack for MOH:AA without any trouble
whatsoever. Immediately you can see that a lot of effort has gone onto producing this game. A lot!
You begin the game a small way away from a town with planes fying overhead getting shot down by the
anti aircraft guns situated in the town. To get the outlying buildings of the town you have to run
hell across an open field getting pummelled with enemy gunfire and bombs from above. The field
is full of craters and also has some dead cows strewn about that you can also hit the dirt behind
to get some Goddamn cover. You go through the mission with a squad of men, but you only look out
for yourself. The other guys are computer controlled. However, you wouldn't realise it. At NO
point was I left shaking my head at stupid computer controlled guys doing suicidal things which is a
very nice change. The guys will even tell you what to do. Shoot that guy! Clear out that upper
Storey! The mission flowed extremely well with absolutely NO AI isuues that I could see.
You are the lynchpin for the squad. The guys will keep laying down a blanket of covering fire,
thats right, COVERING FIRE, until you are able to clear out the cowering enemy, stuck behind
a half ruined wall. Call of duty uses the concept of covering fire to extremely good effect. I
Don't think I've yet seen a game that uses coving fire as a tactical playcard you can use to progress
through the level. The suspense it creates is fabulous. You yourself are stuck behind a small piece
of wall, with bullets hailing all around you. Your squad begins getting some covering fire into
action and you dash out with a grnade in hand. Fling the grenade over the bad guy wall, switch to
machine gun and start the hell shooting until you can duck behind something.

Geogrge hated his mother so much that... He lit a fire for her!! Come eat it!

Your eventual mission is to fight your way through the town in this manner so you can plant some
explosives on the Anti Aircraft guns spewing a hail of fire into the sky. This was one of the most
Awesome sights in the game, watching the tracer bullets fly from the AA gun into the night sky in a
storm of yellow hell that lights up the whole goddamn countryside. Added to that is the thumping
sound made as each round is fired off into the black yonder. If you have a decent 5.1 speaker system
capable of a little noise then prepare your ears for this. But don't get too close to the goddamn
things when they're going off. Your ears will die!

Like MOH:AA. Call of duty uses the Quake 3 engine. Albeit HEAVILY modified. You will instantly
notice the feel of the engine as soon as you crank the game. All Quake 3 Engine games have that
certian feel that the engine itself gives the game. It's something that I really can't explain, but
it's like you have a feeling that you know the engine that made the game. Like you never mix up
between games built with the Unreal engine and Q3 egine. They just look and feel different. Hardcore
gamers will know what I mean. After a recent spate of games such as Unreal 2, the textuing used in the
game actually starts to look a little tired. We've seen SOOO many games like this now. The textuing
is as good as any game out there, certainly on a level with MOH:AA or any Q3 engined game for that
matter. With the possible exception of Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast. Take a look in the Jedi Temple and
you'll see what I mean. So the texturing is about as good as the Q3 engine can make it which, admittedly
is beginning to look tired. Time for the DooM III engine to hit town. However, it's not the eye candy
  that makes the game.
However there is some EXTREMELY good lighting effects used in the game. I've
already mentioned the AA guns lighting up the night sky. But also you will notice the doomy orange
glow that escapes for buildings that are on fire. Really something to behold. I suspect that the
whole lighting engine has had some serious work for the creation of this game.

Haunted?? Not for long! AA gunfire! I'M HIT!

The geometric complexity of the game is about what you'd expect from any Quake 3 engined game. Kinda
blocky. But only Kinda. The level designers have really worked with the engine in this respect and
only produced environments that the egine can handle. Which are nothing to be sneezed at by any
means. It's no DooM III. But neither is it Renegade. Geometric complexity is again, about the level
  you saw with MOH:AA.

Call of duty is goung to make it's mark with gameplay. It is very easy to see that the game has been
made with gameplay as it's chief drawcard. All aspects of the game are a very high standard, but nothing
we havn't seen before. The difference will be the gameplay. You are harried along through the missions
without a thought of being able to get bored. The game adds an element of tension and rush as you craftily
work you way through the level. You are able to aim using the iron sights on the weapon you carry. You
put the gun right up to your eye and peer down the length of it with the baddy stabbed by that little marker
on the end of the barrel and pull the trigger. This will greatly improve your accuracy and is good for when
the enemy fools poke their heads out to shoot at you. Tactical elements like this are what adds so much to
Call of duty. Make no mistake it is a VERY good game. I made it through the demo in about 15 minutes and
was left wanting more. Many demo's I simply delete after about 5 minutes with a disappointed shake of my
head. Not this time. If you enjoyed MOIH:AA. Call of duty is for you. If you are sick of Q3 enine
war games, at least try the demo. You'll get sucked in.
