Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too?
World Party (If you enjoy Jeff, the Wilburys & ELO)

Karl Wallinger
World Party (WP) is Karl Wallinger (Ex-Waterboy... You may remember the classic 'This Is The Sea' album from which the hit 'Whole Of The Moon' was lifted.). He does everything himself with minimal help from others. Many ELO-Jeff Lynne fans have taken a shine to this guy as he reminds many of them of the Lynnemeister himself...

WP 'ELO styled' songs include 'World Party' (Private Revolution), 'Put The Message In The Box' (Goodbye Jumbo)
and especially 'All I Gave' (Bang!).

Others include 'Call Me Up', 'She's The One' and 'The Whole Of The Night' from 'Egyptology'. The latters chorus is a dead ringer for the chorus from Balance Of Power's 'Endless Lies'...

"Come round and visit please
I'll introduce you to my other family
They came from Mars tonight
To watch the human race go by..."

The Whole Of The Night: World Party
K. Wallinger 1997
"Stand back take a look at you
You never cared if you wanted to
Keep saying that it's gonna change
But every time it comes round again
It's a merry go round..."

Endless Lies: ELO
J. Lynne 1986

Karl's music and singing voice, although sometimes melodically reminiscent of Jeff's is more a mix of The Beatles, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, Prince, and Bob Dylan with a dash of folk, blues and funk...

Perhaps we are being too judgemental in pigeon holeing Karl's music, claiming that he has been influenced by Jeff Lynne. In reality, and in many other musical cases (That is unless they actually come out and say they are influenced by ELO/Jeff Lynne) it appears more likely that most of the artists that ELO / Jeff Lynne fans are drawn to have one single defining influence...
The Beatles.

The famous 'Rockline' radio broadcast in 1990 had Jeff Lynne saying that he thought World Party was a pretty good (The time of Goodbye Jumbo album)... In '98, Karl is believed to have returned the compliment by remarking that he would rather take a bath in razor blades than be compared to Jeff Lynne (Ouch!!!).

Don't let that remark put you off though otherwise you'll miss out on some very impressive music indeed. My personal favourites would have to be 'Private Revolution', 'Goodbye Jumbo' and his last album 'Egyptology'.

The New Radicals

It made a lot of sense to mention this new CD by The New Radicals after discussing World Party.
There's been talk about the hit single 'You Get What You Give' released from this album sounding a little like Jeff Lynne... To my ears it sounds like Jason Alexander has derived his musical influence purely from The Stones and World Party!
This is a great debut from The New Radicals. I can't wait for the next one!

1990
Bellybutton
1993
Spilt Milk

1994
Ro Sham Bo

The Jellyfish (ELO 1976-1986/The Move 1967-68)

This wonderful, critically acclaimed yet publicly overlooked band released two albums before giving up, deciding that fame was not destined to come their way (Now doesn't that sound familiar?!). The two albums are packed with deliciously produced, power pop masterpieces (Co-produced masterfully by Jack Joseph Puig... If you see that name on anything, ask to have a listen... He's got a damn good set of ears!) and provided a stamping ground for five talented musicians Andy Sturmer, Roger Manning, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning & Tim Smith.

Both albums are worthy additions to anyone's CD collection, but the second is my all time favourite. 'Spilt Milk' was the album they said that they had always wanted to produce... Lushly orchestrated, full of layered harmonies and sprinkled with sound effects.

The ex-Jellyfishes have since found themselves in high demand for session work (Sturmer & R. Manning even found themselves on the 'Time Takes Time' album by Ringo Star) and have also gone on to form other bands such as Imperial Drag, The Umajets, The Grays or work solo as Jason Falkner has.

Their confirmed influences range from The Beach Boys, Queen, ELO, The Move, Cheap Trick to The Beatles, 10cc, The Kinks, Crowded House and The Who
, melding together to produce a magnificent hybrid...

Any ELO - Lynne - Wood - Move fan would find these two albums a treat to the ears! The Jellyfish were also a great live band and their act even included a version of 'Flowers In The Rain'!

Can You Still Feel
I thouroughly recommend Jason Falkner's two solo albums. This guy does everything, from writing, all the way through to production.

He left the Jellyfish after the 'Bellybutton' lp... From what I can make out, it would appear that the band were dominated by Sturmer & R.Manning.

This meant that poor Jason, who was obviously bursting with ideas had no where to go... He formed the '68 Beatlesque sounding (a-la 'Rain') Grays (Ro Sham Bo) in 1994 with Jon Brion, Buddy Judge and Dan McCarrol (Produced by Mr. Puig) before releasing his first solo
effort 'Author Unknown'.

AIR ("You know... That French band?") (ELO 1977-1978)

This endearing album really sprung from left field in 1998, capturing the attention of anyone who came within earshot. Two thirds of the album manages to capture the ELO sound, circa 'Out Of The Blue' (1977-78) period with a dash of 'On The Third Day' for good measure... La Femme D'Argent (inst'), All I Need, Kelly Watch The Stars (inst'), Talisman (inst'), New Star In The Sky (inst') and Le Voyage De Penelope.

One of the re-worked instrumental tracks 'Remember' (d whitaker version) complete with sweeping strings could have been straight from 'Out Of The Blue'. This track can be found on the CD single 'Kelly Watch The Stars' (and no, it is not a tribute to Kelly Groucutt!).

They weave their way dreamily from one track to another, conjuring up aural images of what you might get if you let loose ELO, Jean Michelle Jarre, Kraftwerk, ABBA, Louis Clark, Andrew Powell, Brian Eno and even Burt Bacharach in the recording studio!!!

I'm positive if you asked Jean-Benoit Dunkel and Nicolas Godin what they love listening to I'm sure you'd find ELO high on the list... My strong advice is to get some AIR today!
  More to follow soon, including...
The Lightning seeds (Jollyfication), The Merry Makers (Bubblegun), Crowded House, Brian Wilson, The Alan Parsons Project, Radiohead, Collective Soul, Kula Shaker, Klattu (Hope)
Fool's Garden, Enya, Barenaked ladies, Julian Lennon (Photograph Smile), Vanessa Mae (Storm), Mathew Sweet, Freedy Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Elton John
(Made In England) and much, much more!!!
