Matt and Anna

Comments:

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate Matt and Anna for their public and dignified show of support of those dancers who were unable to take part in this year's Australian Dancesport Championships.  For dancers not to be allowed the 'freedom to dance' and the 'freedom of speech' is unacceptable. Thank you Matt and Anna for having the courage of your convictions and for supporting your colleagues in this way.

I would like to send a huge thank you to the dancers who performed at the Government House Ballroom on Open Day. They danced beautifully to a large appreciative audience that included the Governor of Western Australia and his family. The Government House Ballroom is the perfect venue to showcase ballroom dancing and these wonderful couples did us proud. So thank you to Brodie and Lana,Sean and Lauren, Ben and Kylie - and a special thankyou to Craig and his new partner from Estonia, Greta. You were all absolutely wonderful. Good luck at the States everyone.

Queensland Open - Easter Weekend

Comments:

We had another great weekend of dancing at Jupiter's Casino on the Gold Coast Sat 3rd & Sun 4th April. The weekend started with the Workshop on Good Friday 1pm-5pm. Lecturers this year were Richard & Natalie Perry (standard), Peter Todd (new vogue), Adele Hyland (latin) and Craig Wilson (his theme was 'organic performance').

The Qld Open was superbly organised - as usual; this standard of organisation and the great music have been a feature of this comp since we began attending about 8-9 years ago. The Qld-ers are also a friendly bunch so the whole event has a good feeling to it. Our favourite marshall (Colin) wasn't there this year, but his replacements were equally good and again very friendly and supportive. As we walked onto the floor on each occasion, the last word from the marshall was always 'good luck to you all' - and said with a smile.

This year the organisers tried the new update of the scrutineering system (from Dallas & Martha Williams - Dancescore; see http://www.dancescorelive.net/ ). This is the same software used at our Perth comps but some new features were added. The back numbers had barcodes on them. The marshalls had a hand-held scanner and scanned in all the numbers for that event. Each adjudicator had a PDA - and therefore they had all the numbers already loaded for that event as the couples walked onto the floor. Debbie Sullivan, Vicki Barden, Peter & Rosalind Smith could give you their thoughts from an adjudicator's point of view on the system. For the competitors - it meant very quick recall sheets. In all but one of our events these recall sheets were up on the board before we'd had time to finish a glass of water. No kidding! There was a glitch with the recalls for the 8-dance event from the 1st round to the semi-final round which held up the programme for a little while but no great drama.

The comp started at 10am on Saturday - till about 9pm and at 9am on Sunday - till nearly 11pm (including presentations). The guest performers this year were latin dancers Karina Schembri with her new(ish) partner Igor Boev. They were very entertaining and appreciated by the huge Sunday night crowd. Particularly liked their rumba.

As usual, all levels are treated equally in Qld; ie Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Adult, M1 and M2 all share the limelight. This has been a feature of this competition for a number of years. Some of the open final events had show judging again this year - always a bit of an eye-opener for the spectators - and a few 'oohs' and 'ahs' from the crowds as the usual array of marks went up for a couple; eg lots of 1st or 2nd for couple A - and then the inevitable 6th place card from one adjudicator.

At this comp, masters can only dance Masters 1 or 2, not both, due to numbers. We danced in 4 events; latin, 8-dance (std & nv) and standard. There was a semi and a final in latin, and then a round, a semi and a final in the other 3 events.  We came 4th in latin and made the semis of the 8-dance and the standard.

Results for both Sat and Sun events can be downloaded from here: http://qld.dancesport.org.au/

There weren't many other WA couples there this year; Manuel & Yuliya won the adult latin, with Steven G and Jessica Dorman 2nd. Brodie & Lana came 5th in this event. The event was certainly a feature of the evening and hotly contested. Brodie and Lana danced in both Youth and Adult and were in all the finals - wish we had their energy - the body shapes would help too! From memory they won the Youth 10-dance and were first in Youth Standard - in addition to their final placings in other events.

The other couple who represented WA so well was Scott Elstermann and Lydia Tyler - now dancing in Youth/Adult. They danced in so many events I lost count. They won a trophy (can't remember the exact title of the trophy) - but it was something like 'highest placed Youth/Adult couple over all 3 styles'. This particular trophy would have needed a wheelbarrow to cart it away, so I'm guessing it stayed in Qld. They danced extremely well all weekend; Lydia looked just beautiful. They were great ambassadors for WA dancing; congrats to them both.

Daryl Davenport danced in the Pro-Am standard and new vogue with Kellie Smith; they were 1st in the standard event and second in the new vogue event. Natalie Smith partnered Liam McDermott (ex WA) in these same events. They were 1st in the new vogue and 2nd in the standard. These two events were real crowd pleasers.

Qld Open next year is April 23rd-24th - quite late next year, so put that in your calendar. Peeking for an April competition does have its advantages - it makes you get back into training straight after the Xmas/New Year cheer - so perhaps that's a bonus.

Try-Out Day

Can I say well done to everyone who attended the Try-Out Day today. The success was far greater than anticipated with almost 50 people from all areas of Perth. I am pleased to say that a number of partnerships were formed there and then with many others exchanging phone numbers with the intention of making contact this week. Thanks to all the Humphreys staff for your help in facilitating and thanks to all the parents of the junior and juvenile children who made the effort to attend from all parts of Perth. The success was such that we will not hesitate to do this again if there are sufficient expressions of interest. Regards Glen Tierney.

Comments: Soz....4got to mention that these "all time" greats (Ray & Margaret)...Not only took/trained us.. (Dunn & Pinchem) to an Australian title, but did it in 3 styles which we achieved b4 we were 17yrs. (inncluding Sth Pacific and across ALL federations of dance)...Sadly we all seperated as time went on. I'm refering to back in the early 70's now....and i actually have been following their childrens achievements...(way cool by the way).

"Glen Tierney" rings a bell...Was that from the old "Wards Studio" days? Allan Taschack certainly became well known. (if it's the same Glen) hehe.(say no more ;P)

Hmmm....What else can i mention that might jog some memories?

Kerry Wilson?...(ex World Champ)Sold me my first set of English made suit of tails ASWELL as (back in the ABBA days)....Brought back a 45 music single from the euro song festival and did a demo at Orange with music we haven't heard yet...a song called "Waterloo" to a JIVE......was AWESOME and those that were there will NEVER 4get it.

Damn....I'm leading all you ppl on......WE were the guinea pigs for the FIRST "Cat Suits" to be worn in Australia...lol

Styrups took a bit of gettin use to...AND the wolfwhistles...lol.

It's SOOO excellent to see "dancesport" take off......A lot of years and generations went into what it is today.....CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!....Is way cool to watch. ;)

Clearing up

Comments:

Hi all,

I just want to clear up a rumour that has been going around.  I heard the rumour yesterday and it had upset me greatly.  Nathan and myself are taking our dancing very seriously with travelling overseas this year and moving to England next year to further our dancing.  Therefore, I am NOT pregnant and we don't plan on having children until we retire from dancing (our mid 30's).  In future, before rumours are spread that affect other people, please confirm with the person or people involved first as they can greatly hurt other people and it could be detrimental to their dancing and their enjoyment of competition.

Thank you.

Hi Anna

More Congratulations !!!

As many of you will have seen, Ash-leigh Hunter has made the top 20 in SYTYCD.  She has been a competitive dancer in Perth for many years(since Juvenile) and enjoyed outstanding success with her partners, Robbie Brown and later Shane Reilly, before joining Burn The Floor six years ago.  She hails from Lesmurdie, and was a student at St Brigids College.  Lets keep her in the competition by voting for her each week, she is representing WA and Dancesport in this country, so please get behind her by voting for her each week.

Congratulations also must go to a very special friend, Brendan Humphreys who will be a guest choreographer on the show in the next couple of weeks.

Our best wishes to Brendan and to Ash-leigh for every success.
