About Perth Raptor Care |
|
My name is Marra, and I have been helping to rehabilitate injured raptors
in Perth, Western Australia, since 1997. There are volunteers around the state who take
care of all kinds of injured wild animals and orphans. We are known as
I work as part of a cooperative team of raptor carers in W.A. and I am a member of the Society for the Preservation of Raptors Inc. This group works closely with Eagles Heritage Raptor Wildlife Center, where part of the property is devoted solely to flight facilities for recovering birds. I am also a member of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC). This organisation is a great source of information on the latest techniques and standards in wildlife care. Perth Raptor Care consists of my own back yard raptor rehabilitation facilities. I have my own Mission Statement. I use both the Society for the Preservation of Raptors Inc. Standards and the IWRC Minimum Standards as the basis for my facilities. At present, Perth Raptor Care is crammed into a suburban back yard. This is the normal situation for most wildlife rehabilitators. Few of us have the resources to run large centers. Hospital and intensive care facilities take place in a spare bedroom in the house, and recovered raptors are moved outside to enclosures of increasing size. They vary from 1.5 x 0.9 x 0.9 meters in a 'giant jump box', to 8 x 4 x 3 meters in a small flight aviary. In many cases, this housing is not sufficient to condition raptors fully for release, so they are passed on to larger facilities. Here is a little on my perception of the philosophy of wildlife rehabilitation. Like many other wildlife rehabilitators worldwide, members of the Perth raptor "rehab" community feel strongly that educating people about our wildlife is very important. For this reason, I have a licence to bring non-releasable raptors to educational talks and displays. It is amazing how peoples' perception of raptors is changed by seeing one up close. Perth Raptor Care is funded through donations.
