The challenge of man against the sea
aboard a classic sailing vessel is very much the same today as in the
times of the Spanish, Egyptian and Roman sailors who have experienced
the same challenge and adventure aboard a sailing ship a thousand or
more years ago.
This connection with the sea, along with
simple technology, is sailing’s appeal and challenge.
A sailing ship represents relative technology that has
not changed in technique and principle. A well designed hull, strong
ropes and sail cloth cut to fill the wind powering the vessel through
water, is an adventure for everyone to experience. A sailor
must read the wind and the waves while the ship’s course progresses,
constantly making decisions and adjustments to keep the boat moving
efficiently and safely along. More than most human endeavours, sailing
makes demands on the crew’s teamwork, knowledge and experience. This is
certainly one attraction for all to experience and test their ability to
work as a team. |
