RESTORATION

A SUNBER OR A HUMBEAM ???

  • When I bought the car from Murray Bastion, it was drivable and more or less complete. The hood covering was non-existent.

The driver's side door lock and striker plates was missing.

The bonnet would not close correctly and the passenger side front mudguard was distorted causing the head lamp on that side to be much higher than the other side.

    The steering wheel was broken.

The front bumper was at an angle owing to the front mounting brackets being bent.

Most of the wooden body frame was in good order, but the there were some parts which had to be replaced owing to wood rot.

All the aluminium body panels were in good condition and perfectly straight.

The seats and interior trim had been covered with a wine-red velvel material.

The walnut veneer dashboard panels needed re-placing.

It was decided that a "ground up" restoration program would be carried out and the body was lifted off the chassis.

The chassis was thoroughly cleaned, stripped and sand blasted and tested for cracks using the dye-check method.

Apart from two small cracks to the underside of the chassis rearward of the rear spring hangars, no cracks were found.

The chassis was checked for straighteness and found to be true.

The chassis was painted in zinc primer with two coats of epoxy black chassis paint.

The rear axle was dismantled, cleaned and inspected and found to be in good condition, re-assembled and painted.

The four road springs were removed, dismantled and cleaned, re-set and tempered and re-assembled.

    Spring hangar bushes were re-placed.

Front axle components were all removed, cleaned, inspected and replaced.

Braking system was dismantled, inspected, lubricated and re-fitted.

Water pump was removed and dismantled, new shaft and bearing fitted.

Exhaust system was removed and new mufflers fitted.

Both front mudguards and running boards were stripped of paint, templates of all contours made and mudguards and running boards re-shaped by craftsman using traditional methods.

All chrome work was stripped and re-plated.

Work is continuing and will include new hood covering, new leather seats and interior trim, new carpets.

The car is to be re-painted either in original "Gun Finish", a dark grey metallic paint (see DESCRIPTION) or alternatively it will be painted in Rootes 1938 Humber Imperial convertible colour indigo blue with grey hood covering and interior trim.
