Chapter 5: Travelling West

Day Sixty-Four

The group gathered early in the morning to set off for the Naincan village.

It doesn’t take long to leave the city behind, and after a few hours the escorts service was required. Four orcs decided the group was fit for robbing. Both Azeceal and Pyrosh were hit with javelins, then ‘The Rock’ charged into combat after Pyrosh sent a magic missile at one of the orcs. Azeceal swung his great axe with deft accuracy cleaving his way through two of the orcs in quick succession. One of the remaining orcs returned the favour by slicing through Azeceal dropping him with serious wounds. Roedyn proved to be terribly inaccurate with is arrows, and Pyrosh finished off one of the wounded orcs with a ray of frost.

Kafka loosed an arrow at the remaining orc wounding it in time for it to charge at Pryrosh who cut it down with a swift strike of his rapier.

Roedyn used his curative powers to restore Azeceal and Pyrosh to full health. Searching the bodies revealed 500 silver pieces. Later in the day they saw a herd of wild horses, but made no attempt to do anything with them. Azeceal and Pyrosh took the first watch.

Day Sixty-Five

This day revealed that the ostrich creatures seen so often on the island were not restricted to that island. Battles with both the medium sized creature and it’s larger cousin proving their existence.

During the battle with the smaller creature, Pyrosh did very little while Roedyn and Kafka shot several arrows at it. Roedyn hit it twice before Azeceal dealt it the final blow.

The larger ostrich creature managed to get to grips with the party more quickly getting in amongst the group before arrows could be fired. After a few hits from ‘The Rock’ and Roedyn Kafka tumbled through it’s legs and landed a devastating blow from behind.

Azeceal and Pyrosh again took first watch.

On the second watch a wolf burst into the camp and attacked one of the horses, Kafka then shot it with an arrow, drawing it’s attention whereupon it mauled him and Roedyn had to come to his aid. This allowed Kafka to deal the killing blow with his longsword.

Day Sixty-Six

More birds! The hawk-like creatures are here also four are sighted this time, Kafka taking the first shot but missing. Pyrosh slaughtering one with a powerful hit, and ‘The Rock’ clearing two from around his head with one almighty swing. Then the remaining bird hit Pyrosh before ‘The Rock’ finished it off.

A few hours later another flock of hawk-things was sighted – Roedyn downed two, Kafka lost his balance for a moment and almost fell over. ‘The Rock’ then attacked, killing one bird and Pyrosh injured another. The remaining bird proved to be difficult to hit, but was eventually brought down.

Rather than camp an hour from their destination the group walked for the extra hour and reached the native camp. Oreol paid the party the agreed amount and arranged for them to stay in the camp for the night.

Day Sixty-Seven

The party discussed what to do from here, and decided that the smartest thing to do would be to go to the nearest town, which was Parthol. On their way there they spotted a large cat, it slinked towards them and they quickly realized there was another one behind them. Pyrosh sent a magic missile at one and then they both pulled back the skin on their heads and screamed at the party. This was enough to cause Kafka and Roedyn to flee as fast as they could, leaving Azeceal and Pyrosh to deal with the cats on their own for a while. Azeceal proved that a cat is no match for an axe, hitting it with his throwing axe after loosing his grip on his great-axe. Kafka recovered from the fear spell and ran back in time to deal the killing blow to the second cat.

Later in the day the travelers were set upon by kobolds, seven of whom had crossbows. Roedyn and Kafka both missed their first shots while Pyrosh and Azeceal both charged at the crossbow wielding kobolds. Several of the crossbow wielding kobolds moved to the side, and one of them hit Roedyn with a marksman-like shot disabling him. Pyrosh and Azeceal found themselves being swarmed by kobolds and unable to keep themselves from getting flanked.

Kafka picked up Roedyn’s superior bow and picked off kobold after kobold for the rest of the battle. One kobold got a good hit on ‘The Rock’ and Pyrosh did the same to another kobold. ‘The Rock’ then smacked one into the ground. Kafka, Pyrosh and ‘The Rock’ each got one more kill before the final kobold ran from the scene. Kafka took one last shot at it but missed. Roedyn was revived with one of Kafka’s cure light wounds potions.  Searching the bodies of the kobolds revealed three small gemstones, including one aquamarine.

After all this excitement, the rest of the journey to Parthol was short and safe. They spent the night in an inn.

Day Sixty-Eight

Enquiries are made revealing that, though the town is too small to pay for the aquamarine in gold, it is big enough to swap gold and materials enough for Pyrosh to scribe a spell from one of his scrolls. There will be a barge coming in two weeks that they party can ride on to get back to Talonsong. Roedyn spends the first week in training and the second scribing seven spells onto scrolls.

End of Game Session 2.

Days 69 through 82

Roedyn trains and scribes seven scrolls while the group waits for a barge to come and take them upriver. The barge arrives in town on day 81, and is ready to leave again on day 83.

During your two-week stay in Parthol Roedyn completes his training and scribes some scrolls, but the rest of your stay is fairly boring. Little happens in this hamlet, and the items for sale aren’t impressive or exciting. Early in the second week a group of six people and 10 horses passes through the village with covered wagons. They do not stop.

Beginning of Game Session 3.

Day Eighty-Three

Once they discover how slow barges move upstream, the party thinks they should have walked.

Day Eighty-Four

The party still feels that they should have walked.

During the day the party sights a green dragon flying north, and much commenting issues along the lines of: glad we’re heading west, not north.

They stopped for the night near some trees, that turned out to be preying mantises. The Rock sliced one in two with a mighty blow. Pyrosh burnt one with a burning hands spell, Kafka then slashed it and was knocked out for his trouble. The only other person to be hurt was Pryosh, and his wounds were not severe.

Day Eighty-Five

Spent the day talking about whether they should get off and walk or not, finally coming to the decision ‘yes’ right before nightfall. Oh well.

Day Eighty-Six

Realized they didn’t have enough trail rations to last the journey on foot, this caused a few problems… but they eventually realized they could take their share of the food from the barge.

Four small birds but they posed little problem, as Kafka and Roedyn both felled one each with arrows, and the Rock cleaved the two remaining birds out of the air with one swing.

At night the group was attacked by a dire weasel. The nasty thing drained some blood from Kafka, and then Roedyn. Roedyn managed to break it’s grip before it could finish him off, and then the rest of the party, who had been woken up by the commotion finished it off.

Day Eighty-Seven

The party simply walked and regained some of their lost blood. Seeing little other than fish in the river.

Day Eighty-Eight

Arrived in New Karlinger. Roedyn decided to rest in the local inn to regain his health and scribe some more scrolls, while Kafka bought a chain shirt. Pyrosh and The Rock drank themselves silly on a gallon of ale each.

Day Eighty-Nine

Roedyn decided to rest in the local inn some more to regain his health, while the rest of the party looked around.

They heard the tale of a young girl who had vanished a few days ago. A local teenage boy was the last person to see her, and he was accused of kidnapping or murdering her. Naturally he fled the town.

Kafka used excellent diplomacy to convince the boy’s mother to reveal his whereabouts, and then also talked the boy into showing the group where he last saw the girl.

Investigation of this area showed that some large slithering creature had been through the area. After a long while they managed to track the creature two miles south of the village.

The salamander like creature managed to impale The Rock twice with its heated metal spear, but ultimately was not able to deal with three attackers at once. After the fight it became fairly apparent that the girl had been kidnapped as food for the creature.

Day Ninety

As there seemed to be little else happening in the town the day was passed with some more drinking.

Day Ninety-One

The group was attacked by a giant wasp, but they spotted it far enough away that they could soften it up with arrows, which allowed them to deal with it easily.

Day Ninety-Two

Arrived at one of the native villages, found hardly anyone home, and decided the place was boring.

Day Ninety-Three

Arrived at Martol. There is no inn in this tiny town, so instead the group had to stay in the common house, which is a place for people to stay while their own houses are incomplete. On the up side it was free.

Whilst there they met Gerard, the halfling storekeeper, and Gelf, a cantankerous old man whom the well spoken party had trouble understanding.

Gelf:

There were a group like ye here not long ‘go. We show’d ‘em a native tomb we found not far from ‘ere. We couldn’t find no way in, but they went there a‘gen the nex’ day. Two days later they came back tru’ t’ town. Hardly said a word, an’ wouldna spend a penny! Off thee were, tin’t right! Tin’t polite, gettin’ all dat treasure and no spendn a ting!

Upon asking if they could be shown the tomb:

Sure! I can show ‘e to the tomb. But don’t ‘spect to find anytin’. I reckons they took all thee cud find.
