The Newbigging Family

 

• 1. Jane Fraser NEWBIGGING, daughter of James Newbigging and Jane Fenwick Fraser, was born on 24 January, 1898 at Innellen, and died on 3 September 1957, Gillingham. She married William Christie Fraser (see Fraser Family).

   

• 2. James NEWBIGGING, son of Thomas Newbigging and Mary Taylor, was born on 1 December 1866 in Carstairs. He married Jane Fenwick Fraser, daughter of John Fraser and Margaret Strachan, on 8 November 1894 in Chapelhill, Errol. Children of James Newbigging and Jane Fraser are:

 

• Jane Fraser Newbigging, b 24 January 1898 at Cumbrae View, Innellan. She married William Christie Fraser (see above).
• Margaret Strachan Newbigging, b 9 October 1895 at Cumbrae View, Innellan. She did not marry.
• Mary Taylor Newbigging, b 25 December 1896 at Cumbrae View, Innellan. She did not marry.
• Thomas Newbigging, b 25 March 1900 at Cumbrae View, Innellan. He died as an infant.
• Nellie (Ailie) Ballantyne Newbigging, b 24 August 1902 in Busby. She did not marry.

 

• 3. Thomas NEWBIGGING, son of James Newbigging and Janet Prentice, was born on 21 March 1825 in Carnwath. He married Mary Taylor, daughter of William Taylor and Helen Henderson on 1 June 1854 in Carnwath. Children of Thomas Newbigging and Mary Taylor are:

    • Helen Newbigging, b 16 April 1855 in Carnwath. Helen married Peter Ballantyne (b Lismore, Argyll ) in 1880.
    • Janet Newbigging, b 11 June 1858 in Carnwath. Janet married John Tweedie Graham in 1883.
    • Mary Newbigging, b 11 February 1865 in Carstairs Mains. She married John Leckie of Newhaven Parish, on 20 June 1912.
    • James Newbigging, b 1 December 1866 in Carstairs. James married Jane Fenwick Fraser (see above).

 

 

• 4. James NEWBIGGING, son of John Newbigging and Marion Pennie, was born on 6 July 1800 in Libberton and died on 26 December 1876 in Carnwath. He married Janet Prentice, daughter of Thomas Prentice and Helen Howi(e)son. Children of James Newbigging and Janet Prentice are:

 

• Thomas Newbigging, b 21 March 1825 in Carnwath. He married Mary Taylor (see above).
• John Prentice Newbigging , b 30 September 1838 in Carnwath. He married Mary Ann Thompson on 21 December 1865 in Edinburgh. His second wife was Agnes Anderson whom he married on 23 November 1871 in Edinburgh. John's children from his first marriage were Jane G Newbigging, b 1867; James Newbigging, b 1868; John J Newbigging, b 1869; Janet P Newbigging, b 19/9/1870. His children from his second marriage were William Allister Newbigging, b 13/7/1873; Margaret A Newbigging, b 1878; Ann A Newbigging, b 1879; Anthony Anderson Newbigging, b 5/8/1872.
• Marion Newbigging. She married Robert Tweedie on 7/7/1854 in Carnwath.
• Ellen Newbigging. She is believed to have died as an infant.
• James Newbigging, b 22 January 1843, Carnwath. He married Catherine McMillan.

 

• 5. John NEWBIGGING, son of John Newbigging and Susannah French, was born on 27 November 1757 in Pettinain and died on 23 April 1823 in Libberton. He married Marion Pennie, daughter of George Pennie and Katharine Matheson on 31 December 1788 in Libberton. Children of John Newbigging and Marion Pennie are:

 

• Robert Newbigging, b 15 October 1789. He married Ann Tweedie. Robert died 30 January 1837 and Ann died 20 January 1824. They are both buried in Tweedsmuir.
• Marion Newbigging, b 23 October 1791.
• George Newbigging, b 8 September 1794; d 11 January 1813. Buried in Libberton churchyard.
• John Newbigging, b 4 January 1797. He married Barbara Brown on 22 May 1825 in Broughton. They are both buried in Broughton. Their children were: Robert(died 2/2/1868); George (22/11/1820); Violet Burnet Young (30/10/1825); Marion (31/10/1826); Agnes (19/2/1828); Elizabeth (8/7/1829); John (17/9/1830); Janet (8/1/1832); James (25/11/1833); William Gibson (1836); Mary Ann (1837).
• Thomas Newbigging, b 4 January 1797.
• William Newbigging, b 1 January 1799. He married Ann Robb on 19 December 1828 in Broughton. Their children were: Agnes Sinclair (13/3/1829); Marion (20/12/1830); John (18/8/1832. Married Christian Weir in 1869); Richard Robb (27/12/ 1834); William (25/8/1838); Ann Robb (9/6/1841).
• James Newbigging, b 6 July 1800. He married Janet Prentice (see above).
• Dandas Newbigging, b 19 April 1803. He married Agnes Swan on 1 December 1835 in Broughton, Peebles.
• Pennie Newbigging, b 12 February 1806 in Broughton. He married Margaret Robb on 8 November 1833 in Broughton. Their children were : Richard (1836); Agnes Sinclair (1840).

 

• 6. John NEWBIGGING, son of Thomas Newbigging and Janet Bradwood, was born on 30 March 1712 in Carmichael and died in 1792. He married Susannah French, daughter of William French and Margaret Paterson, on 8 June 1734 in Carmichael. Children of John Newbigging and Susannah French are:

 

• Thomas Newbigging, b 18 April 1735, in Carmichael. He married Janet Lamb on 27/5/1758 in Pettinain. Their children were: Janet (11/5/1759); Elizabeth (31/12/1760); William (19/5/1763); Thomas 16/8/1765); John (2/9/1767); James (16/5/1769); David (29/7/1773); Margaret (17/4/1776); Eleanor (8/8/1778). All children but Eleanor were born in Pettinain. She was born in Edinburgh.
• Margaret Newbigging, b 15 July 1737, in Carmichael. Margaret married Thomas Smith on 4/11/1759. She died on 27/7/1818 and is buried in Pettinain.
• Janet Newbigging, b 19 October 1739, in Carmichael. She married Hugh Scott in Pettinain on 17/8/1764.
• Elizabeth Newbigging, b 24 February 1742, in Carmichael. She married John Dickson in Pettinain on 5/12/1767.
• William Newbigging, b 27 April 1744 in Pettinain. He was a tenant farmer at Grange Farm, Pettinain. He married Anne Prentice on 30/9/1774 in Pettinain. Their children were: Janet (27/8/1775); John (29/11/1776); Thomas (27/4/1778); Susanna (5/12/1779); William (5/10/1784); Euphan (20/11/1790); Archibald (31/12/1792); David (13/4/1795); Andrew Carmichael (11/9/1797).
• Mary Newbigging, b 21 June 1747 in Pettinain.
• Susannah Newbigging, b 5 October 1749 in Pettinain.
• Susannah Newbigging, b 21 June 1752 in Pettinain. She married James Lindsay in Pettinain on 14/10/1775.
• Euphan Newbigging, b 23 February 1755 in Pettinain. She married James Pringle in Pettinain on 10/1/1776.
• John Newbigging, b 27 November 1757 in Pettinain. He married Marion Pennie (see above).

• 7. Thomas NEWBIGGING, married Janet Bradwood (or Braidwood) daughter of James Bradwood (or Braidwood) on 13 August 1709 in Pettinain. Children of Thomas Newbigging and Janet Bradwood are:

 

• Jannet Newbigging, b 10 August 1710 in Carmichael.
• John Newbigging, b 30 March 1712 in Carmichael. He married Susannah French (see above).
• James Newbigging, b 29 January 1714, in Carmichael. He married Margaret Wallace on 13 July 1750 in Carmichael and lived at Thornyhills farm on the Carmichael estate. John died on 6/5/1782 and Margaret died 23/8/1811. They are buried in Carmichael with son David 4mths; son David 27yrs; son Thomas 70; son James 68 and daughter Janet aged 59 yrs. Other children of James and Margaret are: William (28/2/1755); Margaret (5/2/1759); John (23/3/1761); Robert (28/2/1763); Elizabeth (23/1/1765); Mary (27/5/1768. She married William Allan); Joseph (15/3/1773. He married Susanna Newbigging).
• Thomas Newbigging, b 1 October 1718, in Pettinain at Cloburn farm. He married Marion Sommerville on 20 July 1765 at Pettinain. Thomas died on 10 May 1800 and Marion died on 26 July 1773. They are both buried in Pettinain with their son John 11yrs 10mths and daughter Marion 1 yr. Other children were:Susanna (3/4/1769. She married Joseph Newbigging son of James Newbigging and Margaret Wallace); Margaret (20/8/1770); Janet (6/6/1776) and Elizabeth (30/4/1771).
• Elizabeth Newbigging, b 8 December 1720, in Pettinain. She married John Miller on 7 May 1748. Their children were all born in Clackmannan.
• William Newbigging, b 7 August 1726, in Pettinain.
