The judge on the night could not work this image out, and asked me to provide an explanation after he had finished judging.

I didn't want to tell him that my 7 year old son had identified the key figure in this image almost instantly. If you are looking at this one on a computer screen, it may be obvious that this is a picture of a woman's mouth.

How was it done? Quite simple. I was playing around with a heap of black drinking straws that had been cut into 4cm lengths with the intent of making a grid-spot for a Nikon SB28 flash. I happened to look through the bunch of straws and thought that the reflection on the inside of the straws created an interesting image. So after convincing my wife to put on her reddest lipstick, and mounting a flash on either side of the grid spot, a photo was taken (actually several were taken before I got the exposure right). Her mouth was about 7cm from one end of the straws, and the camera about 20 cm from the other end.
