Entered as "Untitled", this photo got good feedback from the judge. This photo says something about the subject -- namely "depression" and this may actually be a better title for the photograph. The hunched over, hands wrapped around knees, downward look, combined with the very dark tones of this image send a strong emotional message to the viewer.
As to what constitutes a portrait, this is an ongoing discussion in all art circles (e.g. read this flickr thread). There are probably hundreds of other arguments about what consitutes a portrait.
This photo is an example of the photo as illusion or reality. The illusion created by the photo is one of depression on the part of the subject. However, the reality is quite different. The subject is my wife Rachel, and dear woman that she is, she burst out laughing when I said "think of something sad -- Kafka [our dog] has just got run over". (You have to meet the manic flying fur-ball to understand why she erupted in laughter.)
A club member claimed you had to be brave to enter a photo like this. I don't know why -- maybe because it does not fit the norms of what people would expect as a portrait.
