Background: Louis was originally known as Louis von Bertling (von is a German preposition which approximately means of or from) but the "von" was dropped when Louis went to England as it had no significance there. It is thought that the Bertling Coat of Arms is in the Cologne Cathedral. It is unknown if it is a hanging, a stained glass, or other item. Family members have mentioned that Louis was apparently friends with Kaiser Bill (grandson of Queen Victoria) and Otto von Bismarck but this has not been confirmed. Some of his descendants remember his son Oswald saying that Louis had a brother (although his name is unknown) and he married a woodcutter’s daughter. It is thought he may have settled in the United States of America.

Occupation: Louis was a Commercial Artist (Lithographer) at a printing firm in Germany. Louis left Germany ca.1860 and took up a position in England with a printing firm in Everton, Liverpool. Later he held a position at Sir Joseph Causton and Sons, London. A decanter set was presented to Louis by his fellow overseers in Southwark Street as a token of esteem, on his retirement from the firm of Sir Joseph Causton & Sons, Printers, Publishers and Stationers in February 1898. The Canadian Patents database shows Patent CA37482 “Process for facilitating the reproduction of Lithographic Pictures, Designs, etc.” was invented by Louis and patent issued on the 29th September, 1891. It is thought he may have also joined the Foreign Legion for a term at some stage of his life. |
