Death of Richard’s father - Paul Kirkwood

After the sudden death of his father, Paul Kirkwood at Walcha in 1859, his mother Amelia was left with three children under four years old. Neville Kirkwood, Richard’s grandson, suggests Amelia and her children moved to Gympie with her parents to follow the gold rush. This may have been the case but on 25 May 1863 she remarried to James Edward Salmon at the St John’s Church, Armidale. Then, from 1866 to 1874 Amelia had another six children all born in Armidale. Amelia died in 1877 and was buried at the Old General Cemetery, Uralla.

Richard and his sisters - Amelia Jane (1856-1935) and Margret Lucy (1857-1914) all grew up in Queensland so it would suggest their grandparents, Richard Taylor and Susannah Boyd, were their guardians. Another sister, Sarah Rebecca (1854-1857) had already died.

The next 10-20 years is sketchy. Although it is believed Richard and his sisters remained in Queensland, the Taylors eventually returned to Armidale where they died – Susannah in 1872 and Richard Taylor in 1882.

The Manager of one of the Gympie Gold mines was a gentleman named Windley. He had at least five children: Thomas (1857-1936), William (1861- ?), Henry (1854-1856), Henry (1866-1867), Mary Ann (1869-1940), Sarah [Sis] (1871-1940) and Henry (Harry) Bosworth (1874-1943.

Richard, Ann and Family

Richard Taylor Kirkwood married Mary Ann Windley (known as Ann) in Brisbane on the 6 October 1888. Richard and Ann had four children:

· Cyril Norman Kirkwood (1889-1969)

· Leslie Vernon Kirkwood (1890-1933)

· Reginald Victor Kirkwood (1892-1927)

· Harold Roy Kirkwood (1894-1968)

Residence and Occupation

Richard’s initial occupation was rather uncertain. It was said he owned a retail shoe business in Queen Street - the main Street of Brisbane but was forced to sell it because he owned a racehorse and had many debts due to his racing interests. Ann, even after being widowed in 1913, seldom missed the mid-week meetings at Ascot or Doomben racecourses.

Once the Australia Electoral roll started in 1903, it shows that for the next 10 years the Kirkwood’s lived at Mayne Street, Bowen Hills and Richard’s occupation was printer while Ann is shown as home duties.

Their children went by train to the public School at the corner of Edward and Adelaide Street, Brisbane City.

Richard’s Death

Richard died on the 19 March 1913 at the age of 54 but it is uncertain how he died.  He was buried at the Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane.

In 1914, Annie and boys, H Roy, Reginald and Leslie, moved to “Winsor”, Fairleigh Street, Windsor. By 1925 H Roy Kirkwood and his bride Rose, had moved to “Lynmouth” at 18 Yarraman Street, Lutwyche.

Annie lived the rest of her life at Fairleigh Street with her favourite son Cyril. She died at the Royal Brisbane Hospital on the 23 April 1940. After her death, the estate was left to Cyril.
