This
workshop surveys strategies for capitalising on children's creativity
in the early years as these are suggested in two new books for my
series “Creative Musical Experiences”. This collection is
designed to encourage children to invest imagination, energy and
knowledge into the creation of their own literary and musical works.
No single process or set of strategies has been the sole template for
the evolving poems and songs. Sometimes music came first, sometimes the
words. Sometimes children had wonderful ideas but difficulty in letting
them freely into the world. Some songs pursue particular themes or
concepts;
others are presented solely for the pleasure of performing them
I don't guarantee they'll all
work for you but I hope you'll share them with your classes and
children. These can be purchased through Wooldridges A&M Educational Superstores

In this workshop I share
experiential music making from a range of regional cultural settings.
These could include among others, Indian Stick Dances, Angklung and
Gamelan Music, The Balinese Kecak, Sri Lanka's 'Malu, Malu, Malu',
Vietnamese Folk Music and Indigenous Australian children's songs.
The activities will illustrate my notion of 'home-grown' music
pedagogies, referred to in the paper 'Going over the Top; the evolution
of indigenous music pedagogies and educational practices in
postcolonial Australasian contexts', in the December 2003 issue of
Research Studies in Music Education.
Additionally a CD Rom
comprising units of work, music and graphics, is available for AU$20.00

Using the "Boys Business" manual
as its working resource, this workshop introduces a range of issues
related to middle years boys in education with particular reference to
the use of music as one of the 'vehicles' for working with strategies
designed to address these issues. The methodology of this workshop
encourages engagement with a range of experiential activities each of
which may address more than one of several criteria of outcomes.
Recommended format, based on the working manual, is in three
one-and-a-half-hour time slots. The first introduces theoretical
background, the second practical strategies and the third examines the
tools and allows time for reflection. An abbreviated one-and-a-half
hour afternoon workshop may be accessed by regional schools.
