Fremantle Bypass Land Reclaimed by Community

FREMANTLE (February 5th, 2001): Green Star Brigade spokesperson Fryd Mehta announced today that the Brigade has reclaimed land back from Main Roads WA and returned it to the Fremantle community.

The Brigade has built a community billboard on the High Street/Stirling Highway intersection site stating 'No Freeway Thru Freo'. The heritage house on that site was recently demolished against community wishes by MRWA.

The Green Star Brigade took this action to counter Main Roads attempts to induce urban blight in the area.

"We intend to further our work at the site and encourage the community to make the space a true community area. We will be developing the site in stages and look forward to feedback from community groups about what to put in there. The neighbourhood is keen to make this blighted block into a communal park," he said.

"We need to counter the multi-million dollar propaganda campaign that the State Government has expended on this insane freeway plan," he said.

Mr Mehta is concerned that the FEB (Fremantle Eastern Bypass) is simply a power struggle with the unelected bureaucrats against the Fremantle community. If the Court Government stays in this will be a battleground.

"We have proved that the freeway is not needed. MRWA's actions are unwarranted and amount to bully-boy tactics," he concluded.
