Amundson, Merle H., died Tuesday, April 3, at home surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with cancer. Merle was born March 5, 1928 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Helmar and Marie Solibakke Amundson. His mother, born in a sod cabin in Minnesota, moved by wagon to Bainbridge Island, Washington. Merle served in the U.S. Army, 8th Cavalry Division during the occupation of Japan. When he returned after serving in the Army, he graduated from the University of Washington and earned a Master's degree from U.C.L.A.. Merle was an accomplished businessman, a Presbyterian elder, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and sailor an adventurer in business and life. Merle's love of the sea and mountains was surpassed only by his love, pride and devotion to his family, with whom he shared a great love of God. He is survived by his wife Mary of 48 years, his two daughters and husbands, Lynn and Monte Pries, Anne and John Hoover, son and wife, Rev. Eric Amundson and Veronica, grandchildren Jennifer, Ashley, Allie, Jackson, Anne and Sam, and granddog Pistol. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach on Monday, April 9th at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for the roof and boiler of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 346 Bird Ave., Buffalo, N.Y., 14213 where Merle's son Eric is pastor.
