Not just an illness
by Carrie Harris

Not just an illness

A dark lurking presence
A lingering doubt at the back of your mind
A megaphone for fears and failures
A microscope for imperfections
An amplifier for disappointment
A muffler for hope
A constant ringing in your ears
Telling you it's never going to end
A buzzing insect that won't die
A hopelessness
A pit
A dark hole

It's not just an illness; it's a tangible presence
Depression
It highlights your failings, and dulls your success
It blinds you to hope
Screaming dangers, losses, fears, doubts
It's an uphill battle
Even with God
Because who is God anyway?
Faith believes, depression doubts
Death the only sanctuary
Or so it seems ...

A note from the author

I've been battling depression since I was eight years old. You think I'd have the hang of it by now ;)
