Becoming best friends
by Celeste Smith

When I saw you first
You were a stranger.
Then we talked or rather
Laughed at everything
Together.
Then we found things
We had in common.
A favourite DJ.
Same music.
The love of laughter
Within a depressing world.
The interest in the
Beauty of language.
I saw you more as
A possible best friend
Even though I didn't
Believe in best friends
Any more.
Slowly we revealed
Our dreams and wishes,
Admitted we had
Skeletons in the cupboard,
But agreed we weren’t
Ready to get them out.
Maybe one day we will.
Or we might lose contact
Stop calling, stop visiting
I’ll understand- not.
I hope this story has
A happy ending.
That our friendship
Blossoms in to an
Evergreen foliage,
Not one that dies
As autumn approaches.
Time will tell
As it always does.
I hope we stay
Friends for always.
Maybe best friends
Even though I don’t
Believe in best friends,
Except I’m willing to
This time.

A note from the author

I believe that sometimes we find those special people in life that just make us believe in a whole new way of life and bring out te best in us and this is what that poem is all about.
