Cages
by S. Viddaurri

How we do cling
To the cages in which we are born
Not of our own design
Inherited
And meticulously maintained
According to our belief
Not loved for their own sake
But for the false comfort
Of familiar dimensions
No matter how confining
Or painful
And though we may change
Or rearrange the furnishings within
We can never be truly alive
Until we move beyond our bars
And proclaim ourselves to the world.
