Fighting Shadows
by S. Viddaurri

fighting the shadows in
the game of insane
winner takes all
loser gets to remain
in pain
everyday the same
day in day out
wondering what it's all about
you can't shout
to a shadow
just go
get low
down so far
down
you're in the dust
of mistrust and forsaken lust
stand on the corner holding the sign...
stranded...like on the poverty line
let me see
i'll show you mine
here, see in this glass
look real quick
gotta be fast
don't wanna get stuck in the past
come up empty-handed
come in dead last
no slop on the plate today
another day of reflecting, blue-chipped
stained, ceramic smiles
stretchin' on for miles and miles
what's your flava
snickety, cynical styles
of jabbing and parry
be wary
shadows are sneaky, slippery beings
whose only meaning
is to stay behind and mock
don't waste talk
watch the clock
run don't walk
fight the shadows who
claw and grasp at you
do what you gotta do
be one of the few
who wins
triumphs the sins
breaks the chain
fighting the shadows in
the game of insane
winner takes all
loser gets to remain
in pain
