BROADFIELD Family in TASMANIA
Thomas Broadfield, a wood turner by trade, was employed by a Mr. Samuel Grew at "Hales Owen" - 1834.
The families' address in Birmingham from 1831 - 1834 was Cox Street.
He was married with two children - Thomas & Jane
Thomas was tried and found guilty of breaking into the dwelling house of Samuel Grew on the 16th January, 1834, & stealing a coat, silver watch, five silver teaspoons, three gold rings, two gold seals, three pairs of gold earrings, a garnet cross & other items, to the value of 20 pounds.
During the trial he indicated that he was one of three involved, one a lodger, the other his nephew (who he owed money to and was probably his motive for the crime) This turned out to be William, son of his brother Benjamin.
William was transported for an unrelated crime in 1837.
Thomas did not keep any of the "spoil" for himself and tried to retrieve some of the items stolen. He was able to return only a ring.
As a result, Thomas was sentenced to Transportation for life and arrived per. "Lady Kennaway" 13-02-1835.
