June 1941 saw the death in action of Charles Byard, first to give his life of those who enlisted from the Table Cape district. He died in the Siege of Tobruk in north Africa. H.T. Byard died fighting the Japanese at Milne Bay in 1942.The War Memorial was built to a design submitted by Athol Williams to a competition in 1948. In September 1949 all who served in the armed forces had their names inscribed on the War Memorial, including those who were killed during the 1939-45 War. [Marked with X]
It was unveiled on 26 November 1949 in the presence of the Preolenna schoolchildren who marched in procession.
The first Anzac Day Service was held at the memorial in 1950. Speakers were Mr Bramich (Minister for Housing) and Major Roberts-Thomson. Dinner followed in the school grounds and grown-ups and children took part in a sports afternoon. Sweets provided by Parents and Friends Association.
