ALEX MYERS - Singer, Songwriter, Guitar, Fiddle. From her earliest influences in the school madrigal group, to the American folk wave of the 1960s, to the British/Celtic folk-rock boom of the 1970s, to the rock band years of the 1980s, to the songwriting experiments and return to the folk fold of the 1990s, Alex Myers has been a singer who, despite illness, and the trials of being a sole parent, has constantly pursued excellence in her music. A part of the Tasmanian folk music scene since 1967, she has been involved in some of the most important events of the times, from folk clubs such as THE COPPER POT, THE FIVE BELIEVERS, AD LIB , to the early BRUMIDA FOLK FESTIVALS in Burnie, Devonport and Launceston. She has performed at nine out of the ten TASMANIAN FOLK FESTIVALS AT LONGFORD. She, with David and Helen Atkins, Ted Myers and a few other stalwarts, started and organised the well-known BOTTOM PUB FOLK CLUB at Longford in 1977, one of the most successful ever folk clubs in Tasmania, and as, an offshoot of the same venue, and of the band in which she was playing at the time, TANSEY'S FANCY, formed the well-known dance band THE BOTTOM PUB CEILIDH BAND, which played its first dance on 24/6/1978, and is still going strong, with not an original member left, nearly 22 years later. She has played at THE BOTHY FOLK CLUB in Hobart in the late 70s, both as a soloist and with her folk-rock band TANSEY'S FANCY, and has performed at THE CYGNET FOLK FESTIVALS and THE GEORGETOWN FOLK FESTIVALS. She joined forces with SUE LEE-ARCHER to form the much loved duo, ACCAPPELLA STELLA, which has performed at all the Tasmanian folk festivals, supported ALASTAIR ANDERSON, and presented a workshop at THE PORT FAIRY FOLK FESTIVAL in 1987, and released a CD in 1999 - A CAGEFULL OF SEAGULLS. In 1990 she teamed up with DOUG KELLY and COSMOS, and played supports for THE FUREYS and FOSTER & ALLEN, as well as appearing at the KABARLAH FOLK FESTIVAL in Queensland, and performing at THE AQUARIUS FESTIVAL AT WOODSTOCK. Alex has also supported RALPH MCTELL, MELANIE and DAVE SWARBRICK. Over the last few years, Alex has taken up bellydancing, and has been involved in the formation of the Launceston group THE JEWELS OF THE TAMAR. Alex has been working on writing songs which have a distinctive, evocative style, and in 1998, was asked to be one of the judges for the FFT SONGWRITING AWARDS. As a soloist she continues to perform a range of music, from traditional folk, blues, Celtic music to her own handcrafted songs. Her current band is WISHING STONE - handcrafted Celtic music. |
