Background:

After the birth of my first child I was made aware of the importance of reading to your baby from a very young age.  Even though a baby can’t understand what you are reading to them, simply hearing the sound of your voice and the rhythm of spoken words helps with their development and also increases the bond between parent and child.  However, I soon became bored reading the same old fairytale books.  I wished that there was a children's book about something I was interested in – like surfing.  Why couldn’t a children's book be fun for both the child and parent?

Thus, Alphabet Surf was born.

Initially, Alphabet Surf was just a series of pencil sketch drawings and meant just for my daughter Maclaine and my sister’s son Rory.  But after more and more friends saw the book and commented that it would be something they would buy if on the shelves, I decided to try and get the book published.

Illustrations:

The illustrations are drawn from my experience of surfing and what I dream of when the surf is flat or while at the office. The characters were inspired by my daughter Maclaine and my sister’s son Rory, who are of a similar age and both mischievous. They may one day be carving up in the surf together as in the book.

I have tried to make the book as Australian as possible by adding elements of local surf spots and Aussisms such as the word “girt” which I believe just isn't used enough in everyday language.

Publishing:

I spent many months converting the initial pencil sketches to vivid colour illustrations in a software package and also  thinking about how on earth I was going to get this book printed.  Lucky, at the same time Liz and John launched Nelipot Productions and all my problems were solved.  A strong working relationship was quickly formed and Nelipot was on its way to publishing its first book.
