About the Hospital

RPH is Western Australia ’s largest teaching hospital, and serves as the tertiary referral centre for the East Metropolitan Health Service.  The hospital has 855 beds, divided between the Wellington St (RPH) and Shenton Park (RPRH) campuses.  The hospital was first established in a tent in June 1829.  The current site was developed in 1855.  RPRH was introduced in order to isolate patients during a smallpox outbreak in 1983.  On a yearly basis, the hospital serves: 67 000 inpatients, 15 500 operations, 120 000 outpatient visits and 44 000 ED visits.

Getting There

McIver Station on the Midland/Armadale line exits into the RPH carpark.  If you choose to get off at Perth Railway Station the hospital is 3 blocks away east along Wellington St.  Buses including the Cat Service run near the hospital.

Road access to the hospital is difficult, as is parking.  Driving into Royal Perth Hospital is not suggested if it can be avoided.  Best major accesses to the hospital include using the Graham Farmer Fwy, and exiting at the East End of the tunnel.  Access to the hospital to traffic from the West will be hampered by the ongoing roadworks for the new southern railway.

Parking is available in the multi-storey tower on a user pays basis, but is expensive ($2/hour).  At last check, the university doesn't have access to student parking, but you can try speaking to the staff in the University Department of Medicine, MRF Building.  Be wary as Perth City Council is strict about parking regulations.

RPH is a good hospital to cycle to.  Alot of the bicycle paths around the city are in good condition.  Possible access points include the paths along the railway, paths down either side of the freeway into the city, and along the Swan River.  Access to the bicycle storage area can be obtained by speaking to Parking Services in Kirkman house.  There are shower blocks littered in strange places throughout the hospital.
