
About the Hospital
SCGH opened in 1958, and at the time was
known as the
Perth
Chest
Hospital
. It’s initial brief was the
treatment of tuberculosis in an era were antibiotics were being to control the
disease. The hospital is the
tertiary referral centre for the North Metropolitan Health Service (encompassing
Osbourne
Park
and
Joondalup
Hospitals
). It is a 600 bed hospital,
treating 63 000 inpatients, 40 000 ED presentations and 300 000 outpatient
appointments each year. The hospital
employs approximately 2700 full time positions.
Watling St
is the main thoroughfare of the hospital, running from D20
(psychiatry) to Path/Micro.

Getting There
There
is no railway access to SCGH.
The Hospital is served by a number of bus services:
23, 24, 25 Perth – Claremont
103 and 104 Fremantle – Salter Point, via St. Georges Terrace.
97 the Subiaco Shuttle, running between Subiaco Railway Station and
University of Western Australia in Crawley.
98 and 99 Circle route, runs every 15 minutes between 6.30am and 6pm Monday
through Friday, at other frequencies outside these hours.
Bus stops are located in Hospital Avenue near the entrances to C Block, E
Block, J and K Blocks. Print timetables are available at E Block and G Block
reception areas; timetables and journey planners are also available online.

The easiest approaches are via
Mounts Bay Road
(for people approaching from the east, including the Causeway, Kwinana Fwy and
the Perth CBD), Thomas St (approaching from the Mitchell Fwy, Graham Farmer Fwy
Tunnel and
Loftus St
),
Stirling
Hwy (coming from the Fremantle/Cottesloe area) and Railway Pde (approaching
from the North via the Floreat/Wembley area).
Parking is available in
Limited short-term parking is available near the entrances to A, B, C, E and
G blocks for setting down and collecting patients. The parking is for short
periods. Please read parking signs for details. All these parking areas
are pay parking.
Students have noted that the checking of tickets on vehicles in Car Park 1 is
very lax. Many have been able to get away without getting tickets (but try
this at your own peril).

Riding
along the
Swan
River
places you at UWA, approximately 5 minutes away from SCGH (via
Winthrop Avenue
). Approaching via the railway line
route takes you closest to the hospital campus at the northern most aspect of
Karrakatta cemetery. Approaching
from the direction of PMH, Thomas Road allows easy access, but caution is
recommended as the speed limit on this road is 70 km/h (a cycle path can be
found running parallel to the road in Kings Park).
