Where do old game sites go to die? I'm not too sure, but as Red Alert reaches it's fifth birthday - and this site with it - I'm finally updating things. While I haven't played Red Alert for about 3 years, people keep turning up here so I'll keep the site intact yea though I'm probably the only one left.
Red Alert was originally released for Win95/DOS in late 1996 and made it's Sony Playstation debut around a year later. The PC version received two add-ons (then an unusual thing) Counterstrike and Aftermath while the Playstation version got Red Alert Retaliation - a PSX version of the two add-ons. Finally, a sequel was released in 2000 featuring a much updated game engine from the 640x480 8bit original.
As with many games of it's era, RA featured a custom map making application and this was supplemented by a number of third party editors to create solo missions and go well beyond the map editors capabilities. Unlike previous games such as Doom and Dark Forces, map creation was very easy resulting in hundreds (possibly thousands) of maps being churned out by players with the net result of none of them reaching any particular significance. I created six maps in 1997 all of which are hosted here.
Morse code translation. The Red Alert manual featured a 'hidden' morse code message providing a hint of the giant ants secret mission included in the Counterstrike add-on. To access the hidden mission, SHIFT-click the speaker (to the top right of the screen) when you're in the main RA menu for the 'It Came From Red Alert' hidden missions.

There is a text file with each map with the map information. Just unzip them in your x:/westwood/redalert/ directory (where x: is your root directory) and select it from the maps menu in multiplayer. With all the new maps in Counterstrike and The Aftermath, the custom maps appear about halfway down the long, long list.
C Map E 1.0: Hold the Pass and C Map F 1.0: Hold the Pass II are now available. These are something of a new style of map with missions and background.
