 TERMITES

Did you know!!

The food source for termites is cellulose.

Not all termites eat seasoned timber

Termites need a constant source of moisture

In the termite environment a humid atmosphere of 96% to 100% is created

They maintain a temperature of between 26o - 36o Celsius

Because of this

Termites need to build shelter tubes and stay hidden

Termites will dehydrate if exposed to our dry Atmosphere

Termites live in colonies, which have different casts

Colonies may range from a few hundred to millions of individuals

Winged reproductives (alates) leave the nest in humid weather sometimes in thousands to create new colonies

It may take years for a nest to develop so it may attack seasoned timber

Queens may lay thousands of eggs a day to replace missing termites

The termite queen may live for 30 years, the king for 12 years and workers and soldiers for 4 years

Termites are extremely necessary to the natural environment

Major food source to many creatures from man to other insects

Termites aerate the soil

Remove the dead wood from Forests and return it to the soil in the form of nutrients without damage to the environment

Hollow out logs and branches providing habitats for small creatures

One in five native birds require a hollow branch to nest in

Clear grass in dry areas lessening the likelihood of major fires

Hollow out saplings creating the didgeridoo

RODENTS

Did you know?

Rats eat about 10% of their weight each day or some 10 to 20kg per year

Faeces and urine than ruin more food by eating. A single rat may produce more than 25,000 droppings per year.

Rats transmit diseases such as Plague. Murine Typhus, Weils Disease, Rat Bite Fever and many more.

Mice are capable of also transmitting diseases such as Mouse Typhoid or Duck Egg Disease, Poliomyelitis

Rodent Species

The major damaging rodent species are

Rattus Norvegicus (Norway rat)

Rattus Rattus (Roof or ship rat)

Mus Musculus (House mouse)

Species identification is important for control.

Bait type and placement will mean the difference between success and failure

COCKROACHES

Did you know?

Cockroaches are close relatives to the termite.

Cockroaches undergo gradual metamorphosis therefore the young live in the same areas as the adult.

Cockroaches are omnivorous and will subsist on any food product.

Cockroaches are mostly nocturnal

Cockroaches like to be in contact with surfaces therefore live in cracks and crevices.

Control methods

There are many types of control however with cockroaches the Integrated Pest Control Strategy is extremely important. Hygiene - Structural - Physical - Chemical

The newer chemicals, which can be used in cockroach control, are of very low toxicity and will eliminate cockroaches completely with the help of the owner.

SPIDERS

Did you know?

Spiders are not insects but arachnids.

Spiders are related to scorpions, mites and ticks.

The female spider produces an egg sac in which the young hatch prior to emergence. Some cannibalism may occur.

Most spiderlings must find their own food.

Spiders can replace lost limbs.

The female often eats the male after mating.

Not all spiders are dangerous.

Control methods

Spiders fulfill an important role in the environment and any treatment methods must recognise this important function.

Care must be taken when applying toxins around buildings because;

Windrift Chemicals may drift in the wind and may land in areas, which cause concern.

Treatment to the outside of the building and other areas in which habitation may occur is necessary.

Internal treatments may not be required.

Roof voids may require treatment.

It is important that a thorough assessment of the site be conducted prior to any form of treatment to assess risk.
