Annie is based in
Fremantle, West Australia. She has been painting since chidhood, first
selling in the UK in the 1980s. She has been working in the textile medium
since her arrival in Perth from the UK in 1994 and is now focusing working
with both media in tandem.
Previously she had been "painting" with fabric and thread, utilising
the intensity and depth of the colour of silk, satin etc and using it
to produce artworks on canvas. In
these "paintings" she extends her bold use of colour in predominantly
abstract compositions. Techniques used include applique, free-machine
embroidery, hand stitching, beading and the use of water-soluble fabrics
and heat to extend the range of surfaces produced. This year she has begun
painting again and is now experimenting with combining her knowledge of
both painting and textiles. This is producing a new and exciting direction
in her work.
The themes and inspirations her work are derived from her passions for
both colour, rhythm and music.
Annie has exhibited in various group exhibitions and is currently working
towards a solo exhibition in 2007/8. Details will be posted on the events
page when this is finalised.
She also produces
stitched gift items, available through Craft Shop outlets such as that
at the Fremantle Arts Centre, where her work has been "In Focus"
for a month on three occasions in recent years. These gift items include
brooches, trinket boxes, embroidered flowers, bookmarks etc.
Teaching is the third
string to her bow and she co-ordinates and runs Catalyst Textile Workshops.
These one day classes are held over 2 terms per year and use the teaching
talent of many of Perths top textile artists.
Previous experience
includes painting garden landscapes in acrylics which she sold in the
UK. There she also worked on the restoration and hand colouring of antique
lithographic prints and was, for 4 years, in the wardrobe dept of Sterts
Theatre Company in Cornwall.
