Iron Snakes

Dan Abnett rocks. Simple as that, go buy his 40K books now. He hasn't done a lot of Marine stuff yet though, but what he has done is give us several Iron Snakes short stories in Inferno! magazine. A book is promised sometime in the future, maybe even a trilogy. Their armour is described variously as gunmetal (stories) or in Insignium Astartes it is depicted as a light blue with just a touch of green. I decided to go with the light blue look obviously, Chapter symbol is a sea-serpentesque creature, one of the natural wonders of Ithaka, the Iron Snakes homeworld. I pinched a Dark Elf shield symbol and chopped it up to go on the shoulder pad with a little bit of GS work, didn't turn out too flash first time around, but I'm sure I can do better next time...

Iron Snakes Tactical Marine with Bolter

You'll have to forgive the pictures, I'm playing around with the digicam, trying to get the white balance and so on right so each image looks a little different from the next. Still they're getting better, at least for these photos I've been able to dispense with the flash and the accompanying problems..

Painting Recipe

Whites: They're all experimental and there are 3 types, each method is listed below...

Left Shoulder Pad (Tac arrow): Black undercoat, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, Elf Grey (old Citadel paint line - very light grey with far less blue than anything GW make today - Coat D'Arms still make a very similar paint and Vallejo have a number of 'grey' light greys too). Highlighted with layers of EG/Skull White up to pure skull white. Gives a warmer finish to the white.

Right Shoulder Pad (Chapter Insignia): Black undercoat, Shadow Grey, Space Wolf Grey. Highlighted with SW Grey/Skull White layers up to pure Skull White. Gives a colder, cleaner appearance to the white.

Left Knee Pad: Black Undercoat, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, SW Grey, Highlighted with Elf Grey and EG/Skull white layers. More of a middle ground between the two extremes, takes a bit more work though as you need a fair few extra layers.

Iron Snake Blue: I mixed up a custom shade for this guy, let's call it Iron Snake Blue for convenience's sake. It's a mix of Shadow Grey, Space Wolf Grey and Rotting Flesh, the proportions were eyeballed but at a guess it was something like 40/50/10. The rotting flesh is there to add a touch of green a la the Insignium Astartes picture. There was also a little bit of Fortress Grey to lighten the colour and add some grey to the colour. Dunno how much though, not a lot. This Iron Snake Blue is then highlighted with layers of Iron Snake Blue/Space Wolf Grey up to plain SWG in the end.

Red: Vallejo Game Colour Scar Red, highlighted with layers of ScarRed/ Vallejo Gory Red up to a mix of Gory Red/ Vallejo Bloody Red.

Insignia Blue: The snake insignia is Vallejo Intenso Azul (925) highlighted with Intenso Azul/Enchanted Blue layers.
