Civil Engineering:
I have been working in the Civil Engineering industry for over 15 years as a Draftsman, Road Designer, Sub-division Draftsman and GIS officer. The essentials which are required for good drafting, in my opinion, are Spatial skills, Precision and Patience. The spatial skills are essential for judging distances, sizes and laying out drawings. Precision is neccessary because the plans need to be correct and clearly laid out, so that people can read the plans which are drawn and then use them for construction (perhaps perfectionism is a better term, perhaps not). The precision also applies to making calculations about the project. You need patience to complete and edit drawings, it can be a long and tedious job. Secondary characteristics are creativity, computer/programming skills, customer skills and calculating skills.
I have been involved with road design and planning in state and local government for 13 years as a engineering assistant and draftsman. As an engineering assistant I managed small teams of men, investigated and recommended solutions for road problems and liaised with both local government and public enquiries. As a draftsman I provided drawings and plans, developed small script files and was responsible for the branch data directory. I have also worked doing subdivisonal work for a small company.
The following table is based on my judgement and further analysis can be drawn form the Employment History which details when these skills were used. The longer the periods between use of the skills, the lower the level the skills will be rated, on the basis of "atrophy"
