The Great Southern Herald Newspaper was established in Katanning in 1901 by Mr Stevens of York, Western Australia, under the editorship of Mr E. Mitchell.

It was the first local newspaper to be published in the Great Southern area of Western Australia.

The paper at that time was a double-demi sheet, set by hand and printed on a Royal hand-press. The building housing the plant was a wood and iron construction,

erected at the rear of a residence, removed from the business portion of town. A fire on the premises destroyed early copies of the newspaper, and the oldest copy

housed in Katanning is that of 6th January 1917. All issues from this date have been bound into yearly volumes, and are housed at the premises of the

Great Southern Herald in Katanning.
