  Nhulun Project completed

Dhimurru are pleased to announce that as of last week, the Nhulun Project is finally completed. This project began mid 2004 but due to delays with funding grants and permit approvals, the completion of this project was postponed until now.  The project works included the tower upgrade (making it aesthetically pleasing and safe to cyclone standards), the design and implementation of interpretive signs, the installation of a new picnic table and new street signage, and painting the new upgraded tower.

These works could not have been done without the help of Tourism NT, DOTARS, Alceng Engineering and Alcan Gove, NT Parks & Wildlife Service, Nhulunbuy Corporation, Arnhem Building and Construction, DJ Fabrications, and of course the Project Officers Witiyana Marika, Mayatili Marika and Jane Dermer.

Nhulun (Mt Saunders) is a Registered Sacred Site and was desecrated in 1969 during the early mine construction.  The interpretive signage touches on this recent history along with the story of Creation Ancestor Wuyal, known as the Sugarbag Man.  We hope everyone enjoys the new facility and takes their visitors to the tower so everyone can gain a bit of knowledge of this area while they are here.  Please be reminded that Nhulun (Mt Saunders) is a Dhimurru Recreation Area and a Dhimurru General Recreation Permit is required for access.

Thanks again to all those involved. We are very happy to see the project completed and available to all.

Project Officers Jane Dermer and Witiyana Marika
