The best way to understand a place or a building is to draw it

I find that eyes trained by years of preparing architectural drawings are an accurate instrument for transferring what I see onto paper. The additional discipline of watercolour painting requires analysis and forethought; and the ability to know when to stop painting.

Malacca Diaries

I visited the historic City of Malacca on Malaysia's west coast in early 2001 with the aim of drawing some of the vanishing shophouses that I know from previous visits. The idea was that these sketches would humanise an account I had written earlier of the geomorphic development of the City (to be found under Writings). Though I prepared an outline the article has yet to be accepted by a print publisher.

African Sketchbook

Two months spent travelling from Cape Town to Nairobi with no timetable resulted in these drawings from the places that interested me most; in particular the old City of Zanzibar.

India Notes

Carrying on from Africa with a pencil that was really hot, these images resulted from a flit across the Subcontinent from Bombay to Madras.

Italian Holiday

My interest in Classical building was fuelled by a solo bicycle tour of northern Italy during student years. Though I did have a return booking, I established a pattern of stopping to draw when the place was interesting or heading on when it was not.

Asian Favourites

Some places visited during travels had special resonance, and some days perception was inspired.
