Two sketchbooks form
the core of these observations. The Old Town on the island of
Zanzibar was inspirational with the feeling that it would all
crumble in just a few years. I finished one sketchbook in the
creative ferment and had to beg paper to bind into a second
book. Since the paper was thin and I then lost my fine paintbrushes,
the emphasis changed to toning pencil outlines. This was no
obstacle since the change in technique opened new expressive
potentials.
By the time I reached
Zanzibar, the antennae were fully tuned; not just to record what
I saw, but to select the subjects, angles and time of day to
suit my limited technique and materials.
