I visited Malacca on this occasion with an agenda: to illustrate the thesis that the Old City of Melaka had been developed in waves between the sea and the Melaka River. Along the original shoreline is a line of rich, dense traditional Chinese shophouses and the form is repeated in simpler structures on parallel roads. Finally the 1930s houses which back onto the river are plain and utilitarian.
