The core of the house
was sound and well-loved but provided few views to a puiblic
park to the east. An upper floor turns the house around with
a master bedroom suite upstairs and a covered entertaining space
extending from the dining area below. The cross section allows
for hot western sun to animate adouble height space through
which the stair winds.
A prime requirement was
that the extension should not look "dropped on top",
so the roof over the entry was extended up to the upper floor.
This not only creates a rising, twisting space that draws visitors
into the family centre of the house but gives it the look of
a samurai helmet.
