Y House, Hillarys

A RADICAL RESTYLE TO ENLARGE AND MODERNISE

The original house was the same as several in the street and had awkward circular features. With a brief to provide a home theatre space that opens out to the poolside, an upper floor was called for. So the kids have their own zone; two bedrooms, bathroom and north-facing playroom.

The connecting space became an instrument of environmental control as the stairs rise into a space that is ventilated at both ends. This is expressed externally as a sloping roof that extends over the front entry, splitting the two portions of the upper floor roof.

A poolside patio is supported by a Y column which, like the spectacular hanging stair was the result of detailed collaboration with the clients. Two models formed an integral part of the design discussion process.
