WRITINGS

I am not a writer but architecture needs description

The exercise of explaining myself and my attitudes feeds over into client communication as well as the joys of teaching. I hope that each of my clients learns from our association as well as having their dreams realised.

My Life in Planning

Invited to contribute to a special issue of The Architect magazine showing the work of small practices, I found it a good time to summarise my background and approach to town planning which is intricately interwoven with good architecture.

The Haptic Design Studio with Ali Mozaffari

Two stimulating semesters of tutoring on the invitation of a colleague revolved around his informed and exciting ideas for exposing students to the range of issues and skills that are architecture. The exercise of writing about our intentions and results was even more valuable as it provided space for analysis that is often lacking in the rush for the next project.

The Urban Morphology of Melaka (original report prepared for Akitek Jururancang Malaysia)

A two week visit to the World Heritage listed Historic City of Malacca (Melaka in Malay) in 1987 formed the basis for this analysis of the development of the urban core. Through careful examination of the forms and types of shophouse the old centre was seen as the result of several waves of development. Sketches in the Drawings section illustrate this thesis.

The Buzz of BEE

As a member of the Built Environment Education Committee of the Institute of Architects, I have promoted the importance of a grounding in environmental studies for all students.

Urban Planning

When I was working for the City of Joondalup I was invited to address students of Environmental Planning at Edith Cowan University. This became the vehicle for a discussion of the origins of modern town planning and the influences of recent movements on urban design in Western Australia.
