ANZAB promotes the art of change ringing in Australia and New Zealand and is affiliated with the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers in the UK which represents over 40,000 ringers around the world.
ANZAB was formed in 1961 from local and state ringing societies. The standard and quality of change ringing in Australia today is world-class and this was confirmed by ANZAB’s victory at the first international striking competition held in London in 1991 and again at the second such competition, held in Sydney in 2001.
The first peal of bells was brought to Australia in 1795, and now, over 200 years later, there are forty-seven ringing peals with plans for more. New Zealand has seven rings of bells able to be used for change ringing (with two others that are not ringable for structural reasons).
During the last ten years, ANZAB, despite being a small organisation of around 500 members, has raised many hundreds of thousands of dollars for restoration of old rings of bells and the development of new ones in Australia.
The Association's affairs are managed by an elected executive committee and ANZAB is authorised to offer donors in Australia a tax deduction under subdivision 30-B of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 which is administered by The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Canberra.
