Photographs of Family Graves & Churches
in Germany

Above: Images of Schoningen, a little town about three kilometres south of Uslar, close to the present day southern border of the Länder (States) of Lower Saxony and Hesse, Germany. St Vitus Church above and below is where many of our Wieneke family were baptised and married.

Left: Town name plate.

Left: According to the booklet "Kirchen in der Umgebung von Uslar, Holzminden, Bodenwerder", the foundation stone of the present parish church, St Vitus at Schoningen, was laid in 1736. Inside, the visitor can see a flat, painted ceiling representing heaven. In 1742 the Hattorf brothers donated the present Baroque chancel altar. Beneath the chancel arch there is a painting depicting the Lord's Supper.

Below: St Vitus Parish Records held at the Manse include many Wieneke entries.

Typical housing, Schoningen.
Left: Ahlbershausen neighbours Schoningen (near Uslar). The entire region has gorgeous old buildings, and most towns have a longer than 1000 year history. It is an area anciently settled by Germanic tribes. Beautiful low mountains, the Solling and Rheinhards Wald Grimm Fairy tales, near the River Weser.
