| Family Stories Life in Australia: William was a listed as a draper of Kelvin Grove, Brisbane in Post Office Directories from 1883-84. By 1892-93 his listing showed "commercial traveller". By 1909-10 he was listed as "Wm Begg, Herston Road, Kelvin Grove" (no occupation). His grand-daughter, Cecily can remember visiting "Yemboon", Kelvin Grove. "The home was on a steep slope and the back of the house was two storey with a back verandah, kitchen and living rooms down stairs and bedrooms etc. at ground level upstairs. I can recall always travelling by tram and having to walk up a steep gully at the back of the house. It was when Grandpa was in Cooktown far North Queensland that he got very ill and mother saying he was so far away from home and unable to get much treatment. He probably came home a very sick man. " William died of anaemia and dropsy of the brain and lungs. His will dated 26 Sep 1913 bequeathed all his "real and personal property" to his wife, Elizabeth and nominated her as the sole Executrix. Elizabeth and her daughter, Gertie went to Sydney and purchased a boarding house, "Elvira", at 2 Manns Avenue, Neutral Bay. Unfortunately Elizabeth passed away suddenly nine months later, quite unexpectantly aged 65. Her death was registered at St Leonard's and the informant was Gertrude of Manns Ave, Neutral Bay. "Elvira" is heritage listed and still standing (1998). You and Your Family: At the time of writing (1999), Keith is operating a business, Dodd & Young Human Resource Consultants. He is keenly interested in military history, and together with our son, Kane, trekked the Kokoda trail, Papua New Guinea, last August. Hayley and Kane are studying at university and I am working part-time as a school secretary and devoting most of my spare time to family history research. Life Before Australia: William was the son of William
and Elizabeth Begg (nee Laing). In 1855, his 28 year old mother died
from chronic peritonitis, a condition she had suffered for about 12
months, leaving William, aged 4 and his brother George, aged 2. George
died that same year.William's father was a master butcher and his
grandfather, Alexander was a farmer. Alexander Begg's father, James
was also a butcher. St Nicholas, Belhelvie and East Middlemuir, Aberdeen
are the areas our ancestors called home. |
