Life in Australia:

Record of George's birth has not been determined. He was listed as a labourer residing at Hackham, Morphett Vale at the birth of his daughter, Mary. When his wife, Annie died in 1911, George was listed as Plasterer, living at Queen Street, Adelaide. He died seven years later, aged 84. His usual address was Culvert Street, Parkside and his death certificate indicates he came from Ramsgate, Kent and had been in the Commonwealth for 65 years. Cause of Death: senility. Ann was 19 when she emigrated. "Salisbury South Australia - A History of Town & District" by H John Lewis, p37 states: "Labour was short in South Australia during the period of the gold rush, and in 1852 it was suggested that Irish pauper girls be brought out from Ireland to replace labourers lost to the diggings. By the time more than 5,000 of them arrived in 1854-55, however, there was large scale unemployment in the colony and their upkeep was a burden on the Government ... It was a sad exercise, in reality, and an example of forced labour". Ann married George at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Morphett Vale on 11 Nov 1854. She was unable to sign her name on her marriage certificate and had been in the colony less than eight months. She died aged 75 years. Her death certificate states that her usual address was Queen Street, Adelaide and that she was born in Limerick, Ireland and had been in the Commonwealth for 57 years. Cause of death: Gastroenteritis (2 weeks). Exhaustion.

You and Your Family:

At the time of writing (1999), Keith is operating a business, Dodd & Young Human Resource Consultants. He is keenly interested in military history, and together with our son, Kane, trekked the Kokoda trail, Papua New Guinea, last August. Hayley and Kane are studying at university and I am working part-time as a school secretary and devoting most of my spare time to family history research.
