Family Stories Life in Australia: Thomas emigrated to Moreton Bay, Queensland about 1871. The record of his arrival has not been found, however his death certificate states that he died on 28 Apr 1873, 16 months after arrival, aged 40. His great-grand-daughter, Cec. understood that he was a very sick man when he left England and migrated to Australia with the hope that his health would benefit by the warm climate. She believes he died of tuberculosis. The certificate also states that he was a coachman and that he died at George Street, Brisbane, however his daughter, Elizabeth's death certificate shows Thomas's occupation as an accountant. He was interred at the Church of England Cemetery but no record of the grave remains other than an old faded photograph. The headstone inscription read: "Sacred to the memory of Thomas Paine Yeowell, died 28th April, 1873 aged 40 years. Thy will be done". The photograph is enscribed Toowong cemetery, however he was buried at Paddington Cemetery, Church of England section. The old Paddington Cemetery does not exist anymore and it is thought that some of the graves (the later ones) were transfered over into Toowong cemetery as it was a newer cemetery and what was the Paddington Cemetery is now part of Lang Park where they play all the big football matches and so forth in Brisbane. Parts of coffins were still being found years later, but the findings were hushed up as there had been so much controversy at the time. People in Brisbane with relatives buried in the old cemetery were not thrilled about it being turned into a sporting field. The little wooden church around which the cemetery used to be still exists, dwarfed by the huge grandstands. A document in the Queensland State Archives dated 19 May 1873 lodged in the Supreme Court of Queensland by Andrew Driscoll of Brisbane, Senior Constable, shows Thomas died intestate. With no "person of kin to him in the said Colony, and leaving some personal effects therein now exposed, and liable to waste" the Curator of Intestate Estates was "empowered to collect, manage and administer the personal estate". Thomas's family arrived in September, perhaps too late to claim his effects. INWARD SHIPPING TO THE PORT OF BRISBANE. A list of the Crew and Passengers that arrived in the "MARTABAN" from LONDON, ENGLAND included Mary Ann Yeowell; H.A. Yeowell (Male - under 14 years of age); E. M. Yeowell (female under 14 years of age). There were five males above 14 years, three males under 14 years, five females above 14 years of age, and five females under 14 years of age. Total of 18 passengers, as at Customhouse, Brisbane, on the 11th September 1873. Signed by George Cook, Master. Queensland death indexes (to 1899 and 1930-4) and marriages (to 1899) indexes have been checked for H.A. Yeowell, without success. Life Before Australia: Two christenings of Thomas Paine
Yeowell are recorded on the IGI to William and Betsey Yeowell (nee
Paine). The first-born presumably died in infancy. William was a customs
officer and lived at Bristol and Surrey. At the birth of Thomas's
daughter, Elizabeth, his occupation was book-keeper. At marriage,
he gave his profession as butcher. He and Mary Ann lived at Kingsland
Road. |
